Default 97 Civic - Radio ChOp jOb

I purchased my civic without a radio...

I just installed one, along with all 4 new speakers.

This is where it gets weird.

Problem 1: 12v switched (yellow/red) is dead... even with ignition on.
(I tapped into 12v switch cig lighter wire, but i'd prefer to fix the yellow/red radio harness wire anyway.

Problem 2: The stereo now functions properly and turns on and off with the ignition, but there is NO SOUND! Ive tried 2 different radios, and the speakers play for a fraction of a second when i go from ignition running position to accessory to off. Ive replaced the ignition wiring already, so im not sure what to do. Is there a relay or something i am missing here that needs to be replaced?

I try to do everything myself but when i hit a wall like this, this is the site i turn to. Thanks guys

You hacked the harness (badly) or it was hacked (badly). Also you didn't have to tap into any cigarette lighter wire as the stock radio has it's own hot wires (12v switched and constant). his leads me to believe you botched up the install.

Provide some pictures.

Did you check whether fuse 28 is blown?

Triple check your wire job. Solder and shrink wrap insulate all wire splices. See circuit diagram.

radio harness wire job is fine. this car was chopped bad before i bought it.

multimeter says no power on switch 12v with ignition on. hence i tapped cig switched 12

Rewired for 2 diff radios, checked wiring over 5 times.

1) Battery voltage (~12.5V) is measured on both test tabs of the fuse.

Tested, and fuse #28 (10A) under dash is reading 12 volts on both terminals.

The Yel/Red wire is broken somewhere between the dash fuse box and stereo connector.

Understood. This is why I ran the switched 12v wire from the aftermarket alpine radio harness to the positive switched 12v of the cig lighter, as it works the same.

I can live with that if i cant find the break in the yel/red wire.

My major problem is that the radio turns on with the ignition but i have no sound from the speakers. When I turn the key from run to accessory, I hear sound for a fraction of a second. What could cause this? I replaced the steering column electronics already with a good set I had, and this did not fix the issue. Is there something that controls the flow of electric to the speakers between the radio and the speakers? a relay?? Something is not right there...

Keep bumping it every hour and watch it get locked. It sounds like you got something grounded out. Go recheck your wiring and stop claiming you did it right. I've heard that too many times to count. In the decades I've installed decks into these Hondas I've never had the problem you're describing.

Uh-mazing that you didn't test the wiring before this! I'm wondering how you knew and insisted your previous work was okay but yet you didn't have a properly working headunit? Especially when you said the wiring was shot when you got it!

Next time someone tells you to check your wiring don't just look at it and claim it's okay when WE know it isn't.

I did test it, 5 times.

God, you are an adjudicating person

If you dont post tech info and read my posts, dont post yourself. thanks!

For any future reader of this post let's clarify. Testing the wiring 5 times does not mean simply swapping out one known working deck after the other and then scratching your head wondering why you're having issues. First, if you know you inherited a hack job, use a proper voltmeter and check the wiring. At the very least do a visual/physical check. If you are installing a deck into virgin wiring harnesses, use a proper adapter rather than cutting the OEM harness to bits. Do not insist you checked the wiring when you know you didn't. Just because you rewired something doesn't mean that it was done flawlessly. Check it. You'll save yourself a big headache and a lot of frustration from adjudicating people like me.
