97 Civic Pothole Victim - Rear Lower Control Arm
Last night while driving in the snow, I came around a curve, and BAM! My rear end on the right dropped, and the grinding was unbearable! I limp over to the shoulder, look underneath, and my lower control arm was digging into the road - Apparently the bolt that holds the control arm to the wheel broke, and with the new struts I just put in, the pressure shot the bolt to pieces when I hit the pothole - My question is, what kind of bolt is it, and where can I get one? I have a new set of rear lower control arms that I was planning on putting on in the spring, but do not have any bolts to go with them - Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can find this bolt? I need to get my car back on the road ASAP, because where it is at the moment technically is private property, and I could get towed at any time :-/

Not that it matters too much for this specific part, but year/model/trim level always helps when asking questions. Did you try looking on/for a Honda parts page. It takes two seconds to find one, enter the required info, and find the diagram with the part you're looking for?
Good luck with the arm swap.

It's a 1997 Civic LX - I completely forgot to say the type of car - I'm just so stressed about this - We have a major snowstorm coming tomorrow, and my car is on the road where it would be towed :-(

That bolt is tradidionally $8+ from Honda themselves, your local dealer likely DOES NOT stock them.
Your best bet, Junk yard, or some local honda-head who will have one or two spare or one they can sell / part with for awhile...
I have four spare, not because I lose them, because I'm notorious for breaking bolts.

Do you happen to know the exact size of the bolt? I just need something temporary like a Home Depot bolt on it just to get it off the road

Re: Pothole Victim - Rear Lower Control Arm
period.
Are you planning on replacing your arm while you're at it? I would imagine, and from looking at the picture, the arm is bent and you won't be able to align and bolt it up again.

Re: Pothole Victim - Rear Lower Control Arm
they DO stock them I replaced all my rear/front bolts when I switched over to spherical bearings, on another note my old civic died this way it took the whole lower portion of the trailing arm with it lol was not worth fixing.
here 90173-SR3-003 and it's $13 after tax.

Re: Pothole Victim - Rear Lower Control Arm
After surveying the damage, it's the control arm, trailing arm, hub is screwed up, and from the impact of hitting the ground the strut broke through in the trunk ... Like I said, it was a HUGE pothole :-(
I think I'm just going to junk it at this point - I don't have that kind of cash to fix it

part it out you'll get more ! I've got 1K from mine in the first week then then less each week for a total of 2.4K. **** if it went threw the trunk I'd say game over in terms of cost to fix ratio.

Well, upon closer inspection, it is the control arm (Which I have), bottom bolt (10x1.25mm fluted, can't find ANYWHERE local!), and right trailing arm (Which the cheapest I could find was $300, WTF?)

that's what happened to mine...here's the kicker you'd need to replace the e-brake cable and the brake line to that brake cause good chance the nut is rusted on. and amoung the rust to get all the bolts loose it's not worth it.

Thankfully I had just ordered e-brake cables, drums, and shoes/hardware the day before this broke - The hardest part right now is FINDING a trailing arm - I can't even find one in a junkyard! o.O

I've been checking eBay and Amazon all day, and cheapest I found was $288 - If that's what I'm looking at for that ONE part, screw the car - My buddy just bought a new WRX STi with his tax refund, and will sell me his 'old' one (2008) for $1,000, and I might just take him up on it - Sucks though, because I love my Civic, it runs like new still :-(

LOL, he just got a shitload of money from an inheritance, and is getting all new stuff, and basically giving away everything he had - He had a 2006 Golf GTi decked out to do 275WHP also, and he sold that for only $1,500 - I'd probably do the same thing if I came into a lot of cash :-P

Your buddy is an idiot lol
I have a set of rear trailing arms for a 92' cx (drums) I'm getting ready to scrap, do some research to see if they'll fit and I'll just ship you one, no cost for the parts, just shipping.
Why? I want the POS's out of my garage.

Re: 97 Civic Pothole Victim - Rear Lower Control Arm
I ended up getting one at the junkyard for FREE, just because the guy felt bad that he couldn't get it out without wrecking the bushing - I still need to track down the bolt that connects the control arm to the trailing arm, and no places local seem to carry it - I am pretty sure it is a 10 x 1.25mm x 80mm, can anyone confirm this, along with the proper length? I am going to try and hit Tractor Supply once I get the right measurements, and see if they have a 'heavy duty' bolt that will serve just as well - I need to get this done soon, it's taking way too long to get all the parts together, and everything else o.O
On a related note, it IS possible to remove/replace the bushing without that $160 tool, right? I have seen a few DIYs showing careful tapping around the edges to get the new one in, any thoughts on this?

You may want to hit up your local Autozone and see if they'll rent you one (You get the money back once you've returned the tool(s) intact)
