97 Civic Lowering on stock struts question

Default 97 Civic Lowering on stock struts question

I have researched everything and all i can find is people using coilover sleeves to adjust their ride about 2.5-3 inches all around on stock struts

I dont want to lower or "slam" my car, i just want to buy my buddies ground control sleeves and put them on my stock struts to lower the car to get the gap from the fender to tire away (maybe 2inches or 1.5 or so)

so i want to no is it bad for me or no? even tho im not slamming the car and its my daily driver and commuter

or would springs for that drop be a better idea?

i have my car lowered 2 inches on the front and 1.9 in the rear is been fine so far i have tein s techs SKA24-AUB00 on my mine it got rid of the gap between the fender and wheel

Slammed or not, you should not be doing it on stock shocks.

I don't know where you got that idea.

OEM shocks were NOT meant to be lowered on, or see increased spring rates. They just can't handle it.

ive done it, you just dont wanna go past 2 inch on stock struts.
just depends how new they are, and just save for aftermaket ones.

If you REALLY did "research", which I doubt, no where did anyone worth their salt tell you that running stock shocks on that kind of drop is "okay". Anyone that tells you it is just isn't your friend.

wouldnt do it even 2" the stock strut was not made for that.....i bought skunk2 struts for my wifes car best low cost investment...

I had this set up for a while a few years ago, and would actually recommend it for a daily. It lowers it slightly, looks nice, rides only a bit rougher than stock and reduces body roll. I got the springs used for a pretty good price, but I think they're < $200 new. Many on here will say that lowering springs with stock shocks are a bad idea, but from personal experience, it was decent. I wouldn't use the stock shocks with ground controls though.

If ur going to ask people for advise on this site, take what they give you dont keep asking the same question. Im pretty sure everyone said the same thing just about. I did say I did it, but I dont advise you to, thats why I stated u could for a little while until u get good ones

Personally I would not put a good new set of coilover sleeves on Stock struts. It just seems stupid to spend 300 or plus on a awesome coilover sleeves and put them on worn out struts of a 20 year old car with 200k miles on it.

Whenever i think of this i think of doing only 1 of these options.
This can cost you Nothing to well over a $1000.


1. Cut your springs
2. buy lowering springs
3. buy lowering springs and new OEM struts
4. Buy lowering springs and performance struts.
5. Buy coilover sleeve kit and Performance struts.
6. Buy full coilovers

How much does your friend want for the coilover sleeves?
Are you willing to find a new or used set of performance struts?

he wants $180 for the coilover sleeves
i dont no i want to lower my car a little bit, maybe springs is just the best way for me..

what are the bads about cutting my stock springs? i seen that u mentioned that

I'm running OEM struts with skunk2 springs. Mine rides fine and hasn't given me any probs. I bought the car like this it wasn't my doings but I plan on doing full coilovers but I have no complaints from the setup I'm running now and I like taking curves fast and driving on mtn roads and it hasn't given me any probs at all. Opinions are like buttholes do whatever you feel. If it doesn't work try something different. BUT I DO NOT SUPPORT CUTTING SPRINGS!! I've seen some professionals do it and it work fine with aftermarket spring but I've seen idiots cut springs with 200k+ miles on them and they bounce around and get whiplash so if you are going to get springs cut take it to a performance shop that knows what they are doing so everyone isn't laughing at you when you are driving around with 2 or 3 wheels making contact lol
