Re: 97 Civic Hatch Crash bar
you mean the actual bumper? (not the bumper cover!)
pro- car weighs like 10 lbs less or however much that thing weighs.
con- the car is done if you ever hit anything! really not recommended its really dangerous.

The "crash bar" or bumper beam, as I call it in order to lessen confusion on if we're talking about the plastic bumper cover... helps protect you and your car in the event of a collision.
Replace it with a used part. I'm not sure if a '99-'00 will fit on a '96-'98 or visa versa, but all bodies from each year span should be the same.

Ok well sorry for confusion, but the word he(Guy who is selling the shell) said it was crash bar and said the car never had on. so thats why i said crash bar. But yeah the bumper beam can some one explain it to me. And how much would one cost and how to put it on etc etc anything i need to know. and Is it Worth it?

I would expect anywhere from $30 and up.
Think of it this way... if you were to bump another car would you rather you had paid $30+ to save your frame or would you have rather saved that $30 or more and have a totaled car?

I'm not sure if they're any different, but I'd put the bar in ASAP.
THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.
You might as well drive around without seatbelts because the car didn't come with them and you plan to get Recaros.

I bought my 96 hatch without one either. I bought one new for somewhere around 50 bucks I believe (I don't remember where from)

Re: 97 Civic Hatch Crash bar
the only "crash bar" i can think of that didn't come on '96 and some '97 model years is the reinforcement beam under the rear seat cushion.
the three parts circled in red bolt together and to the floor under the seat cushion creating a brace between the left and right B-pillar. this helps keep the car from folding up like a soda can in the event of a side impact. it also adds a little weight. not much though.
i survived a side impact in my '96 without injury. speeds were low, but like the OP mentioned this model year didn't have these parts from the factory.
edit: looking back at that image the outline i drew for the beam location is wrong. it should be at the front edge of that rear floor section.

Re: 97 Civic Hatch Crash bar
As far as I'm aware, all '96 and '97s don't have the rear seat safety gusset (three piece, 21 pounds total). The shop manual mentions it being new for the '98 model year iirc. I have it mentioned in the trim differences thread under the tables.
OGKoopa., if you look in the FAQ you'll see there's a link to a thread with several sites that sell OE parts.
HondaPartsDeals.com, for example.
For a large bumper beam it would likely be cheaper (once you include shipping) to get it locally, especially if you buy it new and just repaint it if it bothers you.

Re: 97 Civic Hatch Crash bar
If the front bumper beam may be missing for a reason. If the car was in a wreck, and that part was destroyed, it could have also ruined the parts of the frame that it mounts to. You need to look really close at this chassis if you plan on buying it.
The front bumper beam is part for #4 is 71130-S01-A01ZZ and cost $115 new. There is also a foam piece that goes over it part #9 is 71170-S00-A01 for $57 new. You will aslo need 4 of the #26 bolts. I might also check ebay or car-part for used ones if you don't have a junk yard near by.
Here is a link to the diagram for it (set for a 97 DX hatchback):

Re: 97 Civic Hatch Crash bar
Number 9 is just a piece of white foam. Number 4, behind it, is the metal bumper beam ("crash bar").
This is a bumper support / bumper beam. A piece of white foam clings to the front of it, and helps protect the bumper cover (the plastic that you normally see on the front of the car) from being damaged in low speed impacts. It probably does some very light cushioning for the rest of the car as well.
All the pieces for the front end should be in the pic posted above btw.
