Default 97 Civic Gas Mileage

I am getting terrrible gas mileage on my 97 civic ,54k miles on it, I am currently getting about 150 per tank. Recently gave it a tune-up and except for a set of 10mm racing ignition wires everything else is stock. Any suggestions? I am thinking of changing the fuel filter. Also, where and can I have the o2 sensors checked to see if they ok before even thinking of changing?

if the o2 sensors are bad, you'll get a CEL (Check Engine Light). As for the fuel filter, it can't hurt to change that. Other possible culprits: bad fuel injector(s), old spark plugs, bad dizzy, crazy driving habits.

I don't think any crazy driving habits alone could give you 150 miles
to a tank. That includes redlining 1st and 2nd, hard braking and
acceleration.

This isnt always the case....I've datalogged several O2 sensors that didn't trigger a light, but had very restricted voltage outputs. OBD2 cars will often store these codes as "pending" codes, but until a certain amount of incidents are recording it won't produce a true DTC and a resulting cel. The way an OBD1 ecu kicks codes and an OBD2 are much different.

O.P. like the guy above said though, basic tuneup parts are where to look. Have your ignition timing checked with a light, also do a valve lash adjustment if it hasn't been done in some time. Your catylitic converter could possibly also be to blame. Basically things responsible for power loss or inefficient combustion are going to be the root of a large drop in gas mileage.

What I kinda meant was that a combination of the mentioned things could be the reason that you're getting such bad gas mileage. And check your tire pressure.

how many gallons of fuel do you fill up.... im asking because civic fuel tanks are small so the fuel are often unbalanced causing the pump to think its dry.... the fuel pump is located towards the front of the car, so when ever u are facing downhill your fuel meter should get higher....

when ever i have 1/4 tank left parked facing uphill, my fuel light turns on.... and around that time....

if its not that, you could try, replacing your fuel filter, fuel injectors, air filter, o2 sensor, cat... the things that messes with gas mileage....

try not to use ur fan, a/c.... and another possibility would be your clutch but im pretty sure u can tell when its getting worn out..

dont know if this helps..

Usually 10 gallons, the full capacity is 11.9, but I think 2 of those are in the reserve. When my needle is right on top of the the E, i put in 10 gallons and that fills it up.

Thanks all for the replies. Believe it or not I was driving around with an underinflated tire and since I fixed that I seen the improvement. Also I switched gas station and am doing much better now. I am still going to change the fuel filter soon.

Once again thanks!!
