97 civic ex - changing clutch question about seals
Hey guys how's it going . Well last week my clutch just went out all of a sudden. So I parked it and today picked up all the parts and pulled it apart after I got it apart I noticed that it's a thick black gunk all over the inside of the bell housing I thought maybe the rear seal went bad and that caused clutch to slip but clutch was toatally dry. Where could this be coming from the rear seal looks like it's been replaced before . It's not soaking wet in there just more greezy like . I do have a bad oil leak but its coming from up top somewhere I think around the spool valve it's not possible for it to seep down in between the block and tranny is it ? Any help would be appreciated I attached a pic of what it looks

Re: changing clutch question about seals
I guess what I'm asking do you guys thinks it's coming from the rear seal or the on the transmission shaft I need to know which one to replace the it's everywhere all inside the transmission housing and all over the block it's hard to distinguish where its coming from

Re: changing clutch question about seals
I always replace rear seals when I change a clutch, that one looks like *** so I'd replace it anyway.
The input/output shaft seals on the transmission are like five bucks each, you might as well pop those in as well if you're unsure.
I had an H22 that looked just like that and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the problem was. One day like three years down the road I had the engine out of the car and noticed the leak was coming from the VTEC solenoid LoL.

Re: changing clutch question about seals
Thanks . I picked up rear main seal when I got the clutch but I wanted amother opinion before I put it in I'll pick up the tranny seals and do them too tomorrow . Is it possible this cause my clutch to go bad ? The clutch is worn but still had life on I've seen a lot worse . I also had a mother question for you that plate right the on top of the main seal I tried to remove it tonight and couldn't get it to come off I took out the four bolts and the two nut on the bottom but still it's like something else is holding it I was scared to pry on it too hard. Could it just be froze up on there tight or am I missing something . Thanks

I never take that off, but I have before. You're going to want to remove the rear seal before removing that cover, the seal will drag on the crankshaft making it harder to remove. There's two bolts in the oil pan that hold it in along with the four bolts that are visible on the front of it.
After those are out, there's two dowel pins that keep it in place as well as a butt load of RTV sealant on the oil pan gasket. You're going to have to pry it off, but use two flat screw drivers held at different angles to do it so that you can exert prying pressure over a broader area rather than a single spot. Pry from those two "ears" that hang off the sides, start by prying one and when it slowly starts lifting off, move to the other one, then continue moving back and forth til you can fit a large flat screwdriver behind it.

Re: changing clutch question about seals
Ok thanks . Yea the rear seal came with two different types of paper gaskets too I just thought it had to be changed too. That's the only reason I took it lose I wish I would have asked earlier lol . Far as the leak up top I just replaced the spool valve o-ring the one with the screen in it about 8 months I hope it isn't leaking again I do know the back two bolts are stripped on the valve cover that might be where it's coming from I don't think that top gasket on the spool valve is known for leaking is it?

A lot of places that change trans fluid will put 75w90 gear oil in when they swap it out. I've seen some people put 5w30 in. Different places do different things, so on a car this old where nobody knows the full service history, it's debatable on what could be in there.
I would suspect gear oil though as it's fairly common to be put in.

Re: changing clutch question about seals
Well I got it all back together clutch seems to be doing good . But now I have another problem I let it run for a few mins then got in it and got ready to take off and all the lights started pulsating and the check engine light came on . Checked the fuse and the alternator fuse wad blown I replaced it with a 10 amp . Cranked it up and about 3-4 mins later it done it again any ideas? I've checked all the wires I can't find any wires bare. All my grounds are hooked up

Take a close look at your wiring harness, tug on it if you have to. See if you pinched the wiring harness between the engine/transmission when you were putting it back together. Pay close attention to the wire harness on the rear side of the transmission that runs underneath the intake manifold along with the ground wire on your thermostat housing as well as the tires that go from your starter to your battery & the power leads to your fuse box.

Re: changing clutch question about seals
According to the diagram he showed me in the other post their prone to rubbing against the intake manifold bracket. I glanced at it tonight I couldn't see in any bare spots I'm going to try to get it up in the air tomorrow and loom at from the bottom it's hard to see what's going on behind there . This has happend a couple times before I just thought it was a freak thing usually I just replace the fuse and go on its never kept on blowing them like this

Put a 7.5A fuse back into the fuse 15 slot.
Carefully inspect the O2 sensor Blk/Yel wires. One may be damaged/pinched and shorting out.
Also click the Fuse 15 TSB in my signature.

Think I found the problem the rear o2 sensor wire had a little tiny burnt spot in it from rubbing up against the exhaust
