97 Civic, crankshaft pulley fell off to side
Yes, a problem i don`t need. Wife and daughter almost home and she hears a pop. 1.6 Vtec auto and appears crankshaft pulley bolt came out and pulley flopped over throwing a belt. Anyone ever heard of this? Only 161k on car and to top that off locking lugs from previous owner and no lug key. What a bummer. Any insight? From looking, the pulley may not be damaged and the pulley key is laying inside the rim of the pulley but no pulley bolt found yet. Will try to find bolt after daybreak and get locking lugs off.

Re: 97 Civic, crankshaft pulley fell off to side
I've never heard of the pulley bolt working itself loose and falling off. It makes me wonder if the previous owner had removed it for some reason and reinstalled it without torqueing it down properly. Over time that could cause the bolt to work loose.
The only thing I've seen happen related to that is the keyway on the crank that holds the sprocket in place snap off. I've seen this happen on a Kia Sportage and a Mazda Miata. This is bad news when that happens. It obviously also the engine to skip time and requires a new crankshaft IIRC.

i dont know how to help you with the crankshaft but on the locking lugs if you can get a socket that is just slightly smaller you can put it on and hit it mini sledge hammer to force it on then use a ratchet or impact to remove it. if that does not work and you have air tools go to home depot they sell an air chisel for about 25 bucks by cambell haustfield can you can crack the nut off. both ways work.
