97 civic clutch problem

Default 97 civic clutch problem

So i just replaced the clutch in my friends 97 civic ex 4door. Replaced flywheel disc and pressure plate. All parts bought from napa. Now there is almost no pressure. Barely will go into gear. No funny noises and almost as soon as you pull the pedal from the floor it grabs and tries to go. Ive bled it 20 times and no change. Pedal is soft. No leaks. What do i do from here?

did you make sure the clutch was alighned correctly and all the pressure plate bolts were torued to spec?

Check the Clutch master/slave cylinder and lines for leaks. Might have to change out the MC and slave to be sure.

no leaks at all. everything was put in and torqued correctly. Im at a complete loss.

didn't put the clutch disc in backwards did you?

same thing happened to me a while ago. i ended up changing the slave cylinder and the bled the **** out of it and adjusted the pedal. hope that helps, good luck

no. it was mounted correctly. can you even mount them backwards?

i think im just going to tell him to buy a new one and ill throw it on and see. i had a spare from when i was in the honda game, but its seized up. ive never adjusted the pedal.

Is there a cover plate that will allow you to see the operation of the T/O bearing against the clutch disk? If so jack up the vehicle, and SUPPORT it SECURELY and have someone push the clutch pedal in and out while you observe. That will tell you a lot. If its fully being depressed in the clutch fingers are being depressed you may have the wrong clutch, happened to me on a different vehicle...

You may need to adjust the linkeage. How far is the face of the T/O bearing from the finger face of the disk when the pedal is NOT depressed?

havent tried looking into the trans to see, but i have removed the dust boot over the fork and can see the fork moving back and forth a decent amount. im not sure what you mean by adjust the linkage. im hoping and praying for a bad slave. But i doubt it since i can see it atleast halfway working. It moves the fork about an inch, give or take. im probably gonna say screw it and pull the trans, again....

Wasn't sure if Standard Honda's have linkeage or not, most of the vehicles I have worked on do. (Linkeage that adjusts the throw of the T/O bearing).

no linkage for the throwout bearing. only linkage is the shift linkage. He came and picked the car. said he would try it out. He told me he ordered a clutch you a y8. He has a y7. His car itself is an ex. the previous owner blew the motor and put in a y7 with the 78 trans, intake and exhaust manifolds. so he is gonna check and see if the part numbers are different, if they are ill change it out later. Thanks for the help guys.

Not trying to be a dick here...

did you put the throwout bearing in?
Is there enough fluid in the clutch reservoir?
Are you sure the master clutch cylinder is not leaking into the cabin?

had this problem,couldnt see the leak but when i moved that rubber boot off the slave cylinder fluid came out....no good...so, bench bleed it,,fill it up at an angle before attaching to vehicle,and have some sort of bleed assist tool..i bought this syphon with clear hose which was perfect for 4 dollars at autozone.i know the few times i put a clutch in i had to replace a slave or mc...good luck

My problem is kind od like this one. The clutch on our 96 Honda stays depressed, the car won’t go into gear when ignition is on but when it is not on it will. If I turn the car on in neutral it jumps forward. When I try to put it in gear with car on it won’t go into 1st, 2nd, 3rd or reverse and the gears makes a grinding noise. All the fluids are full and there are no leaks. What do I need to do?

Sorry female learning here. I have rebuilt and small boat engine but panicked when I posted trying to get answers before my husband woke up. Since I posted I have traced the lines from clutch and brake lines and found the slave cylinder.
