Default '97 Civic - Check Engine

My car appears to be running good but the check engine light has been on since yesterday. What causes this? Could it be due to rainy and damp weather? I ask this because I think that moisture has something to do with my radio going out periodically and then coming back on several days later when the weather is dry. What to I do to fix the engine light problem? Help!! Thanks alot.
