96 VX (D15Z1) rattle diagnosis - input shaft bearing?
I have a rattle that sounds like it's coming from under the hood. It happens at about 1500-2000rpm in 1st and second gear. Sounds metallic, like marbles in a can. Does not happen in higher gears (or at least I don't notice it.)
When idling, there is no sound when the clutch is in. When I let out the clutch, I do hear a whirring sound... not really a rattle, and not always very noticeable.
Based on what I've read, I believe it to be the input shaft bearing. Most of what I read had to do with the sounds at idle... does the ISB make noise at ~1500rpm if it's going bad? Is this a good enough assumption to pull the tranny and check?
MODS: I fat-fingered the thread title. I do NOT have a 96 VX (surprise surprise.) It's a 94.

Thats an ISB issue all right. 1 or more of the 5 bearings in the transmission went bad, pull the tranny, take it apart and see whats bad, order new parts and reassemble.

I have currently been driving on a bad ISB for about 8 months now. It sounds to get slightly worse each month or so but it's holding strong.
I hear it when I let my RPM's drop at any RPM. Usually if I coast or engine brake obviously. Sounds like a metallic whirling noise, so basically just my gears grinding together because the bearing isn't holding the shaft in place anymore.
