Swapping to a D16Y8 is not much of a big deal, switch to the D16Y8 ECU (P2P) and run a few wires from the motor to the ECU harness. All the other accessories are compatable; power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, axles etc.
I drive a D16Y7 every day and I am not a fan. Upgrading to a D16Y8 is not a bad idea.
This would be a good project for him to learn from as well.

Intake yes, exhaust no, D16Y8 manifold and downpipe is considerably less restrictive though, but requires a new cat and some custom exhaust work. you will need a P2P ecu as mcvtec already stated. You will need to run 2 wires + a ground for vtec. If the car is an automatic and it is to remain that was thats all your wiring, if its a manual you will need to preform what is known as the "IACV fix".
Edit, forgot to mention, make sure you buy a manual engine if the car is a manual, automatic if its an automatic, the intake manifolds are differerent.
Vtec and IACV pinout below.
