96 Hatchback DX - auto to manual swap

Default 96 Hatchback DX - auto to manual swap

Hello Honda-Tech,

First time Honda buyer. Just picked up a 1996 Hatchback DX with 241k...clearly that is alot of miles but it one of the cleanest milano red hatch's I have ever seen.

Price was cheap and just what I was looking for. Only problem is it is automatic. Would like to do a manual swap and your average d-series build at this point.

How involved is a manual swap and what kind of prices am i looking at?

I will need the trans, clutch kit (flywheel, disc, pressure plate), ecu, shifter cables, wiring harness. cluster?

however, i am contemplating purchasing a parts vehicle that is a 5-speed. What civics will I be able to purchase that can get me pretty much everything I need for. I would suspect it would be 96-00 with a d16y7 like i currently have.

I just don't understand the question. It answers itself. Any parts car that is a 5 speed is a suitable donor car. Now if you're looking for tall gearing get the DX transmission. Shorter gearing get the EX.

you can buy any civic from 96-00 all the trannys fit each other

Any 92-00 civic will work.
You shold look for EX models, as they will have the shortest gear transmissions, and usually not as abused as SI's... then again any old 5spd is a gamble... you won't find too many 90 year old grannys selling their stick shift civics that they only used on Sunday's to go to church and stuff.

If you find one that's a 96-00, you can use some other parts off of it too

Oh, and you don't really need a different cluster, or a wire harness, the ones you have will work just wine.

alright. I was under the impression i would need an ecu from a manual only with its wiring harness...

the right ups on auto to manual swap under FAQ's described it that way. I guess because of changing the IACV to a 2 wire from a 3 wire?

In a 96-00 CX, DX, and LX… pretty much any non vtec OBD2 SOHC engine, they all use the three wire throttle body mounted IACV. You only have to mess with it if in the future you decide to swap to a vtec engine, B series engine, or run an OBD2a to OBD1 jumper harness. However, if all you’re planning on doing is an auto to manual conversion, and still keeping your D16Y7 engine, the only thing s you’ll have to change on your wire harness is wire in one plug for back-up/reverse light sensor, and solder a few wires under the center console (by the shifter) as if it’s permanently in neutral.

I’ve done this swap on a 97 DX, as well as a mini-me conversion, and OBD1 conversion. I always ran my factory wire harness, and never had any check engine lights. For future mods, you will have to wire in an oil pressure switch, vtec solenoid, knock sensor (if you plan on staying obd2), and eventually convert to 2-wire IACV, but they’re all simple mods, and do not require a new wire harness.

Having done this before, and helped others do this, I can tell you right now that if you are looking for a donor vehicle, find an integra and do the whole b series swap, it won’t be that much of a price difference, and a lot more benefitial.

appreciate the help...found a few good right ups that should more than get a job done. hey if i can volkswagen swaps im sure i can handle this haa.
