96 EX Civic Engine Swap
Hey everyone, just a quick note to introduce myself as I am new to HT, but have been a member of HCF sense I got my civic. I have almost 20 years turning wrenches with 5 or so on DSM (95, 96, and a 97 Eclipse/Talon), about 10 years on V8's, and the last 5 on just about anything.
I am currently working on my 96 EX. Its got:
d16y8 with CAI and exhaust
B&M short shifter
Energy Suspension throughout
Tein S-tech springs
Eibach Pro shocks
Wicked LCA's
Konieg 17"
C/F Hood
couple other things here and there.
So I got ahold of a 97 LS Teg and want to swap in the B18B1. My overall goal is boosting 10-14lbs, probably out of a gt35 turbo (turbo setup to come after engine is installed and I have the money). The engine I am swaping in has 180k runs good, no oil drops or smoke. The given: yes I am changing out the clutch, water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and oil pump. I am getting a pretty good list together of what is going to be required in the swap. Still working on the mounts....and which ones I need.
My questions for you guys. Will the LS head work with some port work? I am thinking of using a Crower Stage 2 cam, and spring kit. I have the ECU out of the 97 Teg so that shouldn't be a problem, but I am wondering if its really worth going over to the p72, p73, or pr3 vtec head then getting the Golden Eagle LS VTEC conversion. How much of a build do I need on the motor? Sleeved or block guard? What about doing a stroker kit?
I am on a budget so the engine build up is going to come first, and hopefully get it in the car. The only turbo setup that I have found that maintains the A/C is the full-race setup that costs a bloody fortune...

The ls head with porting would probably be an easier, more reliable, and cheaper route than adding vtec. For your computer, many people convert back from obd2 to obd1 because it is simpler to tune and there are more options available, but that depends on what you want to spend and how you are tuning the car. Going back to the motor, most people would suggest focusing on the bottom end. For reliability I would say sleeve the block, block guards many times do more harm than good by inhibiting coolant flow. Also get forged pistons and some aftermarket connecting rods. Before you make any purchases, establish a power goal and look at some other members builds to get some ideas.

I am looking at CP pistions, and probably eagle h beams. My goal is 300hp on pump. I think I want to stay obd2, I will most likely use s300 because that is what everyone so far has sworn by. Do I need to do a mild port, or how much porting is really needed? What about the stroker kit?

anyone have any comments for my ride so far? Does anyone know anyone else that has a GOOD full turbo kit that retains A/C, P/S? All the kits that I saw for AFI don't, and so far the only ones I have found are from fullrace.
