Default 96 ek hatch...title problem

I just recently picked up a 96 dx hatch from a junk yard for dirt cheap and all it needed was a passenger side fender and the headlight and a winshield cause the bags were blown....ok so here goes the tricky part the junk yard doesn't have the title nor do they know where it is and it is a salvage title from ny and ny dmv said the only way i can get a title is from the original owner but the only thing i have is the ny license plates that were in the car and they match the registration sticker on the window but i don't have a name or address does anyone know of anything thing else i can try. I bought the car for parts and the junk yard said if i went through the whole "process" that soon or later i could get a title......a friend of mine has done this before so i know it can be done in jersey...but i'm not sure how things work in ny, also if anyone knows anyone at a ny dmv that would be a great help
well, if not thanks for checking this out

do you need the tittle in NJ to register a car?? im surprise that the junk yard doesnt have the title or insurance company... also there could be a lein on the title by a bank there is alot of possibilities good luck! but I would start with contacting the previouis owner and hopefully the will work with you and not be a pain in the *** about releasing the title too you

And you still bought the car?....shoudla waited until everything or most of the title problems were settled first..

But I would just go to the DMV and get all the info and just contact the previous owner or insurance companyt?

Get yourself a bill of sale form the junkyard. I don't know about New York but in Ca you will have to get a brake and light inspection to go with it if the car was salvaged. Take your bill of sale with all of hte pertinent info and register it...

some states dont allow you to register a vehicle without a title

In nj you can't do anything with a car unless you have the original title....i did what mulletov said and have all the original owners info in ny so now i just have to get ahold of him to send me the rebuild certificate and/or the title and then go from there...thanks!

and i originally bought the car for parts so if i don't get a title it's no biggie i just figured it was a clean *** car and if i could get a title that would be sick!

thanks again! i will update and let you know how i make out
