96 ek dx tranny problem......
i know i'm a noob and i have search for problem with tranny in here for ek but i cant find anything that is relate to my problem...i have a 96 civic dx tranny that is making a wierd noise like the clutch or flywheel is about to fly out from the tranny. It only makes noise when i'm not press on the clutch, but when i step on the clutch the noise stop. Everyone told me that its the throw-out bearing gone bad on my tranny so i order a whole set of complete clutch with everything(alignment tool, throw-out bearing, pressure plate, clutch disc...etc) i told it to a local shop to install it. When i got to the shopi have the machanic listen to the noise and test drive my car. He also say that its the throw out bearing for sure so i told him i have everything just needed his labor charge to put in my clutch. But when i went to pick it up, it still make the same noises......the mechanic dude was clueless as to what went wrong. He then told me that i just needed a new trany cause probably my tranny is funk up....so now i just lost $250 for the labor for nothing......
can anyone tell me what could of been the problem beside this.....
any advise or help would be appreciate .......

99.9% sure its the main bearing.
my friends is doing the same, he also thinks its the throw-out bearing. if you cannot toy with the noise by playing with the pedal, its definitely not the throw-out and the main bearing is trash.
you have only one option that i know of, GM Syncromesh FM (friction modifier)
drain your tranny and use this stuff, don't use anything else, GM FM is that best fluid for a Honda tranny hands down. you can buy it from the GM dealer.
Good luck

Input shaft bearing. I drove around with mine whining for like a year. Then I bought a lower mileage DX trans which is very quiet, hehe. The ISB is at the opposite end of the Throwout bearing, inside the trans. How many miles are on your engine/trans. Mine has like 170k on it

You have to take trans off the car, open it up, remove the gearset, and the ISB is inside the case. Its quite a big job but if you do that, you might as well do every bearing since trans case is already open.
Buy a used trans, its cheaper. Get one with lower mileage.
The ISB is a common thing on high mileage civic's
Try the Syncromesh tranny fluid and see if it helps. Its a Bandaid though

true, but in many cases this bandaid can last a very very very long time.
If you do decide to buy a new tranny if SM dont work, try to get a S20 over the S40 trany, its shorter and a little faster

im a noob too. Get a new tranny. I had the same problem 3 times. I found a used tranny for 50 bucks and installed it worked perfect. The labor to fix whatever is wrong wit the tranny can cost more than a tranny itself. When u buy a tranny wiggle the mainshaft to see if its tight. Make sure u get one thats tight.

listen to bense and everyone else that said input shaft bearing... its pretty common
and definately not worth a new transmission lol. lets all take our money and flush it down the crapper. the isb bearing i just quoted yesterday at honda is just over 30 bux. theres a nice diy writeup on dseries.org. im going to have to do it myself shortly. that mechanic jacked you, n hes probably hoping youll come back to try to fix it again... progressive income right there
