96 coupe DX to become vtec swap gone bad
Hey guys My friend needs help. Well actually his gf needs help. She has a 96 dx coupe. she got a 99 EX vtec sohc engine and the swap was soing to be done by a family member. brother-in-laws brother. I knwo another one of those sob stories. anyway the swap and motor will cost 1000 dollars. is this too much? Now the biggest problem is the guy doing the swap is a shady ****. he took her vtec head and put it on his crx. they know this cause her head is now rusty and old looking and his car miraculously broke right after he got her this "new head" he said he had to swap it cause the old head was bad. BS. He was too cheap to get a cherry picker so he is doing the swap by taking the engine out from the bottom.
Engine swap gone bad.
So my question is how much different is a 96 dx non vtec motor from a 99 ex vtec motor. can this vtec swap be accomplished merely by switching heads and ecu? what about intake and exhaust are they different? what else needs to be changed. thanks for the help.

A mini me swap isnt quit what they need. Go back and take that head back and put it back on her motor. Tahts pretty fucked up.
If she doesnt want to do that because his a family member then just get a new head, headgasket, and headstuds and put it all back together. And then swap it in.

thanks.
Ok I got more info. Her old engine broke. So she DOES need the swap.
But so far the guy doing the work only got her the engine. No tranny or ecu. What is needed in the motor swap? can a DX tranny work with an ex motor? I knwo teh ecu is needed for vtec. thanks for all your help.

Swapping from a DX to EX isn't that hard. The DX tranny will work with the EX motor, but it will be slow, she may not be concerned with that though.
You will need an EX ECU also. Everything else should be plug and play. Except that intake tube will be different. The throttle body on the EX is horizontal whereas the throttle body on the DX is vertical.
