96 Civic moonroof / sunroof rattle
Have seen this described here a few times but not much in the way of fixing it.
It's intermittent, but if you hit any kind of bump or even wavy road, it happens c. 40% of the time. It's a chatter, like some medium-sized part slapping against the sheet metal. I guess if you took off the headliner, you'd see whatever is wrong pretty quickly....
The rattle will sometimes stop if you open the roof. And you can usually stop it by pushing your hand up against the rear middle of the ceiling.
Question -- towards rear of ceiling, in center, there's a plug that pulls out and a brass nut underneath -- 12 mm IIRC. The nut seems to be an adjustment thing, can tighten or loosen. Not just a fixing bolt (or why wouldn't they just permanently cover it).
What is that nut??? And any other tips on the rattle?
Many thanks.

Just to clarify -- the sunroof doesn't rattle. The rails/mechanism up under the headliner, behind the roof opening, rattles.
Thx.

Yes -- not a squeak at all. Just a rattle, or chatter. Usually a rapid one, i.e. a bunch of clicks/knocks in fast succession.
Thanks for your interest.

There is a TSB for a squeak that involves putting in tape around the hole in the roof so the seal doesn't squeak against it, but that's not my issue.
The plug on the roof... if your moonroof gets stuck open then you remove the plastic plug and use an allen wrench (or moonroof tool) to close the moonroof though that hole in the ceiling.

Appreciate that, NOFX! Very glad to know what that plug on the roof is. (Maybe it's even described in, er, the owner's manual...)
Please post if you get this figured out. Maybe even in this thread?
