96 Civic LX - Replaced TPS and now engine won't start

i got a 96 honda civic lx 4 door...i got a throttle position sensor code on but i was told that i had to buy a whole new throttle body to replace a TPS...the guy from the part store said that theres a way you can replace it without buying the whole TB...i need help

Re: TPS?

They're riveted in. You have to drill out the rivets then rivet it back in. Hand riveters are cheap. Look for one in the salvage yard and take the TPS off that one. Pick and Pull is the cheapest if you have one near.

Re: TPS?

Get a dremel tool...and a cutting wheel...a new TPS sensor *you can yank one off another tb or order them online...I think blox makes them check ebay as well* probably a good idea to replace TB gasket too...theyre like 3 bucks.

1. Unhook sensors wires to TB and unhook whatever intake piping you have.
2. Unhook coolant lines from TB.
3. Unbolt TB from intake mani and remove.
4. Take the cutting wheel on the dremel and very carefully cut lines into the rivets.
This turns the rivets into kind of a flat head screw.
5. Use flatblade screwdriver and remove sensor.
6. Go to hardware store and find machine screws of similar length and same thread pattern with a hex head on them. It will make it easier to replace it later down the road if/when you have to.
7. Tighten screws snug but where you have enough room to move it around.
8. Plug the TPS wire in, get a digital multimeter and probe the middle wire of the TPS with the ignition on but car not started.

The reading should be .5v at idle and 4.5 volts at WOT IIRC.

9. Once the reading is correct...tighten it down and replace in reverse order...or however you feel like it really just torque to spec...and don't cheap out...get a new TB gasket.

Couple tips:

1. Since you're pulling the TB off anyways...WHY NOT CLEAN IT?! Get some carb cleaner and go ahead and spray it down and brush all that buildup off. Do this BEFORE you calibrate so you don't knock it off calibration.

2. Say you end up paying 30 for the brand new TPS sensor (don't quote that just a guess) It may be worth it to find an OEM TB that is used, bigger, and already has a working TPS on it for a similar price? Then you get into port matching the intake but it's all about what your future goals are and whatnot.

Hope this helps.

Re: TPS?

Did they have a different suggestion on pulling those rivets? Jw if there's an easier way. I've seen people just tap it with a hammer and a flathead to loosen it but my dremel is always handy so I used the method mentioned above.

Yeah, I don't see how it would have anything to do with the car starting.
