Default 96 Civic - How to check if ecu was upgraded?

I bought a 1996 Honda civic lx from my brother he had a new engine put into it a year or so before i bought it and when i was looking around the Engine i looked up the stamp on the block and it said d16y8 witch is a vtec correct?
How would i check to see if the ecu was upgraded? i guess im just trying to figure out a easy way to tell if its just the block or if the rest of the parts went with it..

Well the ECU will have to be an obd1 one to be chipped so first see if that's the case there will be a jumper since you have an obd2 car. here's how to tell just look at the plugs...Ya Y8 is a SOHC VTEC engine nothing special.

The Y8 uses a P2P ECU. Is that what is installed?

You will also want to check whether you have a Y8 head. The head code can be seen in the area around the exhaust manifold.

In between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder exhaust port on the head will be a casting stamp code. Pxx-xxx followed by the year circle stamp.

Example in this post here.

And the head code list can be found here in the first post.

So you have a stock D16Y8, and a stock D16Y8 ECU. No, the ECU was not upgraded.

Is there any particular reason you're asking (any problems?), or were you just curious?

Upgraded as in chipped? Take the cover off and look at the top right corner. Plugs on the ecu facing down

Please read a thread before jumping in. OP has an OBD2 ECU - it isn't chipped.

Yes, from what you've told us, they put the proper ECU in for that motor.
