96 Civic EX WIth Noisy 5 Speed and 173k!
My wife has an emaculate 96 Ex civ with 173k on it. Ever since her dad gave us the car it's had a grinding noise in the tranny. IT has never affected the funtionallity and the genius we took it to said "well, either it's going to go or it isn't." Wow. Helpful. Lately it's starting to make another noise occasinally. Sounds just like you were going fast in reverse! Almost all of the miles on this car are highway. Is it worth getting a new tranny for it? Any idea of parts and labor costs? I live in Thomaston, CT if that helps. Also, I don't have the tools, facilities or the know how to do it myself.

sounds like you need bearing in the transmission. it may be cost effective to buy another transmission from a reputable salvage yard versus rebuilding it. my guesstamate for a junkyard tranny, new clutch and installation will be roughly $1000~$1200.

Yup time for a new tranny. Most trannys in that generation (96-00) have had problems with the transmission. Depending on where you live it may be hard to find a good solid tranny. If you buy a used one and want to keep the car for awhile, I would reccomend having a professional tear it down and check for clearances and the condition of the bearings, and shafts as well as all the other little things in there. I couldnt tell by the post if it was an auto or manual. Labor and parts is gonna cost well over $1k. Hope everything works out for ya

you can get the tranny cheap off the want to buy section on HT. Its the labor thats gonna kill you. I would recommend you find a family member or friend to do it. its really not hard to swap trans, but if your not confident then have a buddy do it for you.
