Yeah. I had the same problem.. If you would have searched (not being an ***), you could have found my thread. I had the same thing, and my car runs a lot better with the P30. GET THE P30!!!!

??? well on the unkown year of ur engine first check if its jdm or usdm, b16a=jdm b16a2/a3=usdm, the head also says the year right above the headers its kinda stammped on you'll see it if u look. i was running a p72 on my b16a2 and its not too bad, if ur enginea a 0bd2 b16a2 then u dont need to hack ne thing it should be wired already, but find out the year and generation first

There are still differences in the pins in each of the ecu's. I was throwing a bunch of codes and overheating (partly because of the codes) before I got the p30. If you go to www. hybridgarage.com, they have ecu pinouts for each of these ecu's(OBD1). The p72 runs OK, but I promise you will like the p30 even more.

p30 cost a GRIP! They are relatively rare to find as they were really only available in the Del Sol DOHC VTEC.

You might have a better chance getting a p28 for about $100 and then just getting it chipped with the p30 map for another 20-40 bux more.

You don't have to have a P30, any OBD 1 ecu can be chipped to run as a P30 . It can even be a non-Vtec automatic.

You don't have to change any plugs as long as you have obd1 harness you use a obd1 ecu .No plug change no matter what obd1 ecu

we still need to know wether ur ecu or ur engines obd1 or 2 if its a 96-98 then its obd2 to run an obd1 ecu u dont have to cut anything just get an 0bdII-I jumper harness. thats if the previous owner didnt mess with the wiring harness, and just rewired the stock one for vtec.

I would think that he would have had to use a jumper (OBD2-OBD1). If that is the case then the ecu's will swap right out.

in the first post i stated
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by bmxmarine &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">... 96 civic ex with a b16 of unknown generation running off a p72 ecu...the main wiring harness was cut </TD></TR></TABLE>
96 ex already had vtec but from what i am gathering the p72 is obd 2? should i just go throught the whole thing from pin to pin and make shure they match? is there a way to gut all the emissions crap?

im confused,

1)p72 ecus come in bot 0bd1 and obd2
2) yes the ex comes wired for vtwec already. so chances are the previous owner just extended a couple of wires and the engine is possibly an obd2 engine w/an obd2 p72 ecu.
3)since u say the wiring harness is cut. maybe the previous owner ran an entire obd1 wiring harness? and u have an 0bd1 p72 ecu?

i think it is an obd 2 motor and ecu maybe this problem helps...? when i run it hard for a little bit then out of no where it will just start to redline at 6000 or so wtf? how can i tell if its a complete obd2 setup? is there a chip that would let me get rid of all the emissions crap?

Take off the passenger kick panel and pull the part number off the ecu. The middle 3 numbers should say P72 (if that's really what it is) and the last 3 numbers are the revision level, they will indicate if it's OBD1 or OBD2. Call the Acura dealer parts dept and have them figure it out for you.

On the front of the head is the year it was made, if it's 96-up it's an OBD2 engine. It would run fine on OBD1 ecu, but GSR is not the optimum setup. VTEC is too low and you have no IAB to hook up.

If the block is stamped B16a, that should be OBD1 (JDM b16). I.E. 99-00 Civic Si's are stamped b16a2.
