96 civic dx running lean and burning oil, please help
hey guys,
I bought my civic a couple of years ago and it has been running pretty good with no real problems. I had to get a new cat in order for it to pass smog, which honda actually reimbursed me for, I remember changing the upper 02 sensor but I can not remember if I changed the lower o2 sensor.
My problem is that it burns oil, so the plugs are fowled out and they are also white on the end. I runs lean but it is not throwing a cel. Is there a way to check if the lower o2 sensor is working and would a malfunctioning lower o2 sensor cause it to run lean? could it be a water temp sensor? if so, how do I check that.
In addition to running lean burn problem, are there any routine fixes for the oil burning...short of rebuilding the engine with 130k miles?
Thanks in advance.

In OBD2 the 2nd O2 sensors soul purpose is to check the efficiency of the cat. Doesn't effect the computers decisions about how to run the engine. How do you know its runing lean? Are you going off spark plug appearance alone?
As for burning oil, there are some sketchy bandaids, like different high milage oils. But the only way to really fix it is to rebuild the engine.

yeah, the spark plugs are very white, a tell tale sign of a lean burn. I am just wondering if it is not the o2 sensor then could it be the water temp sensor?? I have a AEM CAI but it did this before I put that on.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.

So the car is stock other than the cold air intake? I would check what the first O2 is reading with a scan tool or a multimeter. see if the O2 is reading lean or not.
