96 Civic DX engine replacement and maint (build)
So bought my civic with a low 250k miles on it. Got if for cheap so wasn't really worried about it. Drove it for a few thousand miles after fluid changes and it started misfiring really bad.
I should also state I had to put in a quart of oil every 800 or so miles.
Well I guess that explains the misfire. Cylinders 1&4 were 145psi and 2&3 were around this:
So with 250 on the clock. It leaks oil...everywhere. Rear main, oil pan, crank seal, distributor, pretty much everywhere it can. It also leaks oil into the cylinders...so figured I'd replace ol' leaky/smokey.
Searched around for a few weeks and stumbled on a d16y7 from a 2000 auto civic for $1050 shipped on ebay. Since it only had 40k on it...I was like well **** I'm fine with paying the premium.
Pulled the accessories and head. Didn't see much wrong with the bottom end except cylinder bores were pretty polished after 252k miles, and excessive play with pistons.
Yeah exhaust valves look pretty crunky, head gasket looks fine except for a lot of brown buildup created some partially blocked passages.
So biggest help for when pulling the engine...well before you do is LABEL EVERYTHING! Also put everything in bags. When you go back in this is the biggest help. Then really it's a matter of just removing all the things from the wiring harness and then engine mounts. Decided to pull tranny at same time for ease.
Resurfaced flywheel and put in new exedy OE clutch and PP
Everything went back in pretty smooth.
Next steps are to get a new manifold to replace the cracked one.

Lol, sorry I mean to put that in quotations. Actually when I bought it, the dealer was like this is pretty low miles for a honda and you should still get another 100k out of it. I gave him my phone number and told him to call me when he lowered his price about 500 dollars...was trying to sell it for $1700 without tax, title, registration.

Nice build man! I give you kudos for paying $1000 for this engine lol.. To be honest I would not pay more than $500. Tomorrow I am going to look at one with 110k miles that a local used car part/yunk yard is selling for $350 with a 3 month warranty.

I was weary about paying that much...but shipped to my door with only 40k...the condition was just great. Treated right this motor should have a very long life.

Put a magnaflow 50602 header in with catalytic converter this evening. Wanted something that would last and let me pass emissions. Wanted simple bolt on as well.
This is a few pounds lighter then stock and has better collected then stock. Primaries and exit are stock size.

It's a magnaflow stainless header with incorporated cat. was about $350. I just wanted something that would last and be better then stock in terms of flow, weight, and reliability.
My other thought was just to buy cheap ebay 50 dollar headers.

You probably could have done that but I really like the look of your mangaflow exhaust manifold. Almost looks like a performance header but still has the mounting points for the heat shield. eBay headers will add another aspect of maintenance to your vehicle as it would relocate your primary and secondary oxygen sensors down stream for an ex model.
My factory dorman unit has aged gracefully, and at $140 was priced right
