I had the same issue, super hard shifting and a CEL for P0715, Sensor was fine, wiring was fine. Ended up replacing the transmission, still get an intermittent CEL for P0715 but the shifting is normal now. I'm thinking I should have replaced the torque converter as well.

Re: 96 Civic auto has a transmission CEL code and hard shifting problem
Not that I was aware of, it's mom's car I almost never drive it. I really only drove it to determine that there was in fact something wrong with it. Right before we swapped the tranny it was doing some really funky shifting if you tried to keep a steady 30 - 40mph speed. I ended up picking up a used tranny for $100 and put new axle seals and a new mainshaft seal in it and swapped it in. Put fresh honda Z1 fluid in it and worked great for close to a month, then the CEL came on again, P0715 (same code it had before), cleared code with scan tool, reappeared about 2 weeks later, cleared again, returned about a week later. Didn't even bother to clear it that time (everytime the ECU does the initial relearn the mileage is crap so I figured i'd just leave it alone) light went out on its own a week or 2 later, checked with scan tool, still have stored code, didn't clear it, a couple of weeks later light comes on, stayed on for a week or so, then went out again, I think its been out for over a month now, but still shows a stored code. Whats really weird is that it shifts fine I'm still not sure exactly what the problem is, but i'm starting think either the torque converter is starting to go bad or the fact that I used a Y8 automatic has something to do with it.

Hmmm...as you can possibly see in the diagram I posted, P0715 should not cause the D4 light to blink (OFF for 96-97 Civics), of course unless the service connector is jumped.
When you jump the service connector, does the D4 light blink other codes in addition to code 15 (=P0715)?
