Icon2 96 Civic 5 speed - not able to put it in gear

I bought a 1996 Honda Civic. After I had it a week the problem of not being able to put it in gear showed up. This is probably a reason it was sold. What is causing this?

Can you put it in gear with the car not running?

be more specific there can be a TON of reasons... is there pressure in the clutch pedal? the week that it was driveable, any symptoms? you need to be less vague to get any help!

Sorry about the detail part. New to this. It is a 5-speed manual transmission. I can still drive the car. It has 127,000 miles on it. The problem started out of the blue. I have read a few comments about a hydraulic clutch. Is this somesthing to pursue?

It is a 1996 Honda Civic with a 5 speed manual transmission. It has recently become difficult to put the car in gear. When I start the car and try to go in reverse you can hear the gears grind. The clutch does not have much pressure when you depress the pedal. I blead the slave cylinder on the side of the transmission but not much has changed. I blead the clutch with the car running and not running. I do not have a manual on this car. The gears do not slip that I notice it just seems like it does not allow gear change.

clutch master or slave cylinder is probably bad. Check the line between the two as well.

Is there a sign to tell which one or do you replace both at the sme time? What is a good manual to get for this car.

Can you, or can you NOT, put the car in gear with it just sitting there NOT running?

Helms. At the very least any manual you can get from the local auto parts store.

Check to see which one is leaking. The slave will leak under the boot at the bellhousing the master will leak under the dash.

Sure enough it has a leak under the dash coming from under the boot. I does not appear to have been leaking much, but it has at least got a leak. It looks like this has been changed before. The slave does not look like it has been changed.

Umm dont you need to put the gears in 1st 2nd & then reverse if you wanna go in reverse? I was taught that way and it is always easier to get in reverse if i use that pattern then just putting it in reverse.

You should put it in a forward gear then reverse, doesn't really matter which gear, any forward gear will do, or pause after depressing the clutch before trying to shift into reverse.

Done. Changed the clutch master and slave cylinder. Car shifts great. Getting the cotter pin out of the clutch peddle was probably the hardest part.
