96-00 Civic HB. Leaking Hatch.........where does it come from ????
ok so i go down to see a buddy of mine i havn't seen in a while. And we were BS'n about our cars, 98 civic HB's. and he tells me he has water in his spare tire well. Today was the first time in about a month i drove my car and i go to look in my spare tire well and BOOM theres about a 1/2" of water sitting in there. We live in Washington so yea it rains a bit here. So where does the water come from ?
i havn't gone out and looked for a hole or anything yet just wanted to check with anyone else to see where it comes from and if anyone else has the same deal.
thanks in advance. pics would be good if theres a hole i need to fill up.

I have a leaky hatch also, it looks like it comes from the drivers side of the hatch... that sucks **** too because my hatch leaks like a damn sive. In a related story my back drivers side tail light also leaks.

check the gas tank popper, behind the inside pannel you will be able to see the cable for the popper. check for leakage. there is a gasket for the popper that you will see when your gas tank door is open. i have seen this before more than once

the water comes from tail lights, you need to seal all around the tail lights to stop it. I put silicon around the top of my taillights and it stopped it

well i dont have a pic, but when you pop your hatch, you will see the tops of the taillights where they meet the body. I just it all around where the plastic met up with the body

Mine used to leak. I put down the back seat and pulled everyting out of the hatch (carpet, spare tire cover, spare tire). I sat on the folded seats and my brother sprayed water all over the hatch and rear of the car. After a couple of minutes water started coming in througth the passenger side tail light. I replaced the foam gasket and sealed the tail light with silicone and haven't had a problem in 2 1/2 years. HTH.

just to reiterate (sp?) the point already proven its the tail lights. if you pull out the tail light you will see that there is a foam gasket between the tail light and the car. i used weather strip glue in between the gasket and the car and also inbetween the gasket and the tail light. no problems since. weather strip glue is a little much in my opinion but i had it on hand and didnt feel like going to the store for anything else. any light silicone sealant should do though.

same here...I heard of this happening a lot on them. it only started when i put the red/clears in mine tho... and always seems to be the passengers side when i do hear about it happening.. wierd.. took them out and adjusted the gasket then siliconed it, went through the winter nicely so far.

I've noticed lately that mine is also leaking. Seems like most of the 96-00 hatchbacks have this problem. I wonder if theirs a recall on it or something.

if it indeed your tail lights,
you can always go to the dealer and get new tail light gasket sponge things.
or you can do what i did.
just get some silicone.
put some of the glue on the seal and screw the light back on,
should be fine after that.

Same problem!!!
Replaced the tail light gaskets, and rear hatch seal but water still ends up in there!
I'll check the gas tank thing next time I was the car.

speaking of water in tail lights, anyone know how to take them apart and clean them out? the tails on my EF have had water in them so long they are now discolored and have rust or something inside them.
