95 sol s wont start
Okay so heres whats going on
1.) no fuel pump prime
2.) starter will not spin up nor engage
3.) I can hear the main relay clicking
4.) all fuses are good (under hood and dash)
5.) When attempting to start the car (car turned to start position) lights dim as if starter motor is engaging.
6.) Car is like this hot or cold, dry or humid.
7.) for ***** and gigles I tried to push start, no go (did this before i noticed the fuel pump not priming of course)
8.) battery holds charge, and will crank over a v6 out of a 90 dakota, so CCA are there
9.) Radio, lights, HVAC, windows all have power
so what i need to know is
1.) Will the main relay cause the starter to not turn over?
2.) Will the main relay click if its bad?
3.) what other options are there
The car is a 95 sol s, bone stock motor, but was sitting in a field for a little over 3 years before i started to restore it. It did run, quite strong infact, but all of the sudden the car refuses to start.
any help or advice greatly appreciated, if you need more info please let me know.
Thanks

Re: 95 sol s wont start
The main relay is unimportant for the starter.
The main relay actually has three separate clicks.
Starter: Do you measure battery voltage at the small Blk/Wht starter wire for the solenoid when the key is in the ON(III) position? Do you measure battery voltage at the large black starter wire?
Fuel pump: When you turn the key to ON(II), does the CEL turn on for 2 seconds and then turn off? You should double check whether fuse 31 (hood) or fuse 24 or 18 (dash) is blown.

Re: 95 sol s wont start
@ crxboy, that will be my last thing i check, there are so many other potential problems that might fix it with spending alot less $$$
@ Ron No CEL light at startup (all dash lights are supposed to go on on startup correct?) And once i get the garage cleaned up (tonight, I just got done doing a clutch job for my neighbor, so garage is thrashed ATM) ill push the sol back into the garage and bust out the fluke to get readings, and also am pulling out main relay because its only registering 2 clicks. 1 when key goes id IG (III) and a stronger click when IG is released.

Check the ground on your engine wiring harness, it grounds to the water neck where the thermostat is located. Also check the ground from the radiator support (right side) to the valve cover and/or power steering bracket. I've seen these being loose or corroded cause problems similiar to what you described. Good luck!

Re: 95 sol s wont start
I just had a similar problem with my 95 s; started fine the night before, got up the next morning and it wouldn't start. Everything (battery, fuel pump, starter) was fine; ended up having the distributor replaced.

cmgogo,
It's kinda weird that I read your post right after visiting a site that may have the information you need. This site has a good explanation of the main relay and issues with it. Good luck.

Re: 95 sol s wont start
Update
My neighbor owns a 95 LX so all parts are interchangeable so....
I put my ecu in his car, its good
Main Relay, its good
Starter, its good
battery, its good
Cleaned ecu ground, still no start.
Which leave 2 options, both of which suck
1, the easier of the 2 choices is the actual IG switch
2, the one that is going to suck donkey ***** to check is a comprimised wire somewhere in the harness (ugh)
If i cant find the issue in either of those 2 areas im going to get the bastard towed to a shop and diagnosed there. Did I mention I HATE ELECTRONICS!!!!!!

Re: 95 sol s wont start
Solving the starter problem should be pretty easy and, after that, with a little more work, the fuel pump problem could also be solved.
All I can say is that HT has the expertise to guide you. You just have to be willing to do the work. Just my 2 cents.

Re: 95 sol s wont start
Are you saying that the cel does not go on at all when you turn the key or that it goes on and then clears. I know on mine it comes on for about two seconds while the fuel pump charges the line and then goes off. If your cel light is not going on at all I would focus on that first.

Re: 95 sol s wont start
I have attached a file for checking your IG switch I found.
Also, it seems like one of the main reasons for not getting the cel to come on when the key is turned to II is that the ECU is not getting power to it.
Hope this helps
