Default 95 hatch, speedometer and odometer doesn't work

Like the title says, the speedometer and odometer don't work in my hatch. First thing I checked was the vss and the 3 wires just pulled out of the harness. I noticed the ground wire on the harness side was pretty fried, so I wired the ground going from the sensor to a dedicated ground.

After some research I tested the 3 wire plug with the key at position 2. The yellow wire was at 5v, the yellow/blue wire was at 11v (its supposed to be at 5v) and the ground was at an unbelievable 74 ohms.

Needless to say my spedo still isn't working, I'm not getting a CEL, but if anyone has an idea please let me know.

Does the CEL work?

Your new ground has 74 Ohms? That's high but should still work.

Have you checked for continuity between the VSS plug and the cluster connector?

When you^ turn the key from off to ON(II), does the CEL turn on and then off after 2 seconds?

Woops. Your speedo is bad. Replace it.

My cel light turns on and off after 2 seconds. I haven't tested for continuity at the cluster's side of the circuit, can you tell me the what pin number they're at?

So I decided to test the circuit. On the yellow/blue wire I had no continuity from the vss plug to the cluster. I tested it where the harness connects to the shock tower and I had continuity to the vss plug but not to the cluster. So my ploblem lies there, is there another conector between the shock tower and the cluster or will I have to tear my dash apart?

So I find a a diagram after an hour of research, I tested to circuit to find out I have no continuity to the ecu. I'm thinking I should I just run a dedicated wire from the vss to the ecu, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

So I was doing some more testing and the yellow/blue wire from the vss has continuity to A13 on the ecu, which is the pin for the CEL. Not sure why this is happening. If I just re-pin my ecu harness so that A13 is in B10 (B10 is the pin for the vss) would I mess up my ecu at all?

Focus here^. This is the problem and explains why no CEL is thrown.

The CEL still come on for 2 seconds when I turn the key to the II position. Do you have any idea where I should start looking?

Your test results clearly show that the VSS wire running from the shock tower to the cluster is bad.

So I re-tested the wires and found out I had mixed up the yellow/blue and the yellow/white. I guess the guy I got the harness from wired it up wrong. I had continuity from the Plug to the cluster, and from the cluster to the ecu. I also tested the cel light for continuity between the cluster and the ecu and it passed. Maybe one of the wires for the vss plug crossed with another wire or something and fried my vss. Should I replace the top half of the vss or both parts?

Also, is the b18b vss the same as a d15? Or are all obd1 vss the same?

Well in my last post I stated that I got the two wires in the vss plug mixed up. I have continuity from the vss plug to the cluster, and from the cluster to the ecu, and from the ecu to the vss plug. I even tested the CEL at the cluster and the ecu an I had continuity, and it comes on when I turn the key to II so it's obviously not the cluster.

The problem is that this^ information lacks any detail to allow for verification by any of us. However, if your information is correct then you have a bad cluster or speedometer. This would also fit with the lack of code 17.

I think I have my stock cluster in my garage somewhere, it's the one that doesn't have a tachometer, but i'll switch the speedometer's and post the results.

I switched the speedometer with a known working one and it still doesn't work. I'll check with the junkyard and hopefully pick up a new vss today and post the results.

So I replaced the vss with one from a d15b7, replaced to speedometer with a known working one, and checked the harness and all connections are good, and it STILL doesn't work. But now the cel doesn't come on at all when I start the car.

sounds like you fkd up the wiring inside of your cluster. Are all your fuses okay?

My fuses are okay, all I did was replace the speedometer in the cluster, enforce that the cel worked just like it should and now it doesn't come on at all. Bump for ideas

well that makes no sense, its possible that wires touched and shorted the cluster in some way?
