Default 95 Civic EX overheating after engine swap? Please help :-(

First off im new here so I would like to say hi to everyone :-)

now I have done many re & re motors and this car I must say is making me go nuts!

Anyways I purchased this 95 civic ex cheap with a auto tranny that was not working,Anyway I put a regular civic tranny in it a drove it for the past 4 months but the car never ran good, always had to floor it to pick up speed when stopped and it was even worse as the car got more hot? So I started looking at online issues with this car and found it came with a V-Tec? well the engine in the car was a regular 1.5 civic engine?

So I checked the ECU and it is a P28 so from what I found this was for a SOHC V-TEC, Now this cars body is excellent and I did get it cheap so I saved some cash to restore it to stock. I purchased a JDM D15B and the SI tranny and put it in.

Now here is my problem. I bleed the cooling system and the fan kicks on at idle with the cap off the car, now with the cap off the car does not over heat but once you put the rad cap on a drive for a couple mins it shoots up to the red? and the coolant gets super hot were it bubbles in the over flow as also the fan will not come on? Also the car RPM goes up and down like a MAP sensor was gone?

I can't see any leaks on the engine, hoses or rad? So what would you guys say is the issue? Do you think a head gasket? or is air getting in somewere into the cooling system ,intake? please help as for 3 days I have been working on it and am so upset...

does it push coolant to your overflow tank?? then u check the radiator and its low but your overflow is good?? when the radiator cap is off does it bubble when the thermostat opens??

it sounds alot to me like a headgasket issue, cuz the radiator came with a new cap right?? y wouldnt it? lol you are running into an air pocket in the cooling system when its pressurized by the cap being put on...with the car off just crack the bleeder on the thermo housing and if no fluid comes out then you obviously have an air pocket, then just bleed the system again and go through about a half a gallon of coolant then drive it and if it over heats again, its def your head gasket

lets put it this way...if your fan doesnt come on when the car overheats its your headgasket cuz the coolant passages are fucked up cuz theres compression leaking in your cooling system so the fan switch is reading the incorrect temp cuz its not getting coolant because of the compression leak from the head gasket...let me know what happens...

You should check your ECT sensor while your at it. If this sensor is faulty, your radiator fan will not come on when it is suposed to, or it will come on randomly.

Sounds like air is getting in through a blown head gasket?

Hello guys,

Well I fixed the issue :-) I put my old stat in it and I changed the top of the stat housing with the sensor. Now after this the car stopped overheating as well as the messed up rpm revs? So I dunno if the aftermarket stat was screwed or if it was the sensor? What do you guys think? Also I did a compression test and the read out was great!!!
