Icon3 95 civic dx surging and HORRIBLE gas mileage

i have a 95 civic that keeps surging not sure the rpms dont have a tach, but sometimes when i first start it idles fine but as soon as i start driving it it starts to surge i got a new map sensor but that didnt solve it, i have no vacuum leaks i got a new pcv valve, i just replaced the head gasket in the car as well but it was surging before it blew anyways. i notice that if i unplug the tps sensor the car will idle good and same if i unplug the map sensor (reconnecting them right after) and friend of mine has a 95 integra and he said replacing the tps fixed his problem but i dont want to go replacing parts if i dont have to. i have no cels popping up. not just the surging problem but i am getting very bad gas mileage as well on average i am getting 250 kms per full tank of gas which is alot worse than my v8 olds. i cleaned the iacv and it didnt make any difference, the timing is set right on and i have no gas leaks.

please help i cant afford to drive this car like this

when you say surge do you mean it bogs down in the lower rpms

double check for vaccum leaks - hoses, gaskets, etc.

Also, try bleed the cooling system. An air pocket getting stuck in the IACV might be the problem.

ive already bled the cooling system and that isnt my problem and like i siad no vacuum leaks and when i say surge i mean it rev higher then back to normal on and off repedetely since i put the new map sensor on it doesnt surge when i first start it i can let it idle for even a half hour but as soon as i drive it for 10 mins it starts to surge but only sometimes, sometimes after i just start it (when its cold) it will surge after 10 mins idling

ive read on here many reasons why these honda will surge but none really say that they are getting horrible gas mileage like me

I have the same problem in my 95 ex with a d16z6...it was fine but it's now doing this...itwill surge(small repetitive revs) my mpg went Down and it starts when the car warms up...my buddy and uncle told me to clean The idle speed control valve..if anyone knows of how else to fix let me know please...and I'll let you know if that works

I also purged the cooling system and have no vacc leaks

Why not try cleaning the FITV?

I have the same problem with my 97 EX. After doing some research, I found that there is a small plate on the bottom of the FITV. If you remove this plate, you should see a small, plastic screw. Screw that puppy back in, but don't crank on it because it will break. Try that and see what happens. You will have to get a new gasket when you remove the FITV because it just shreds when you take it off. While we are on this topic, mine will sometime idle right at 1600 rpms and pop as if it is backfiring. When I shift, it jumps and hops. Any ideas??????

my 95 ex with d15b7 in it idles constantly at 1600 rpm, starts off at like 2k and then drops after sitting for a minute to 1600.. I have no vaccum leaks that ive found..

Havent gotten to FITV due to cold weather and whatnot.. I can disconnect the TPS and it will idle alot lower..

Got the car and person before me left it without a thermostat so im not sure if that could be a problem or not.. cold starts it will start to idle up and down a few times then act like its going to die and pick its self back up for first 5 mins of a cold start..

wish i knew the exact problem to look at instead of having to check 40043843 things, hate having a car idle that high..

I had that same problem about a little over a year ago. I changed the small valve assembly bolted to the underside of the throttle body and the surging stopped. I don't know what the valve is called but I think it could be your problem.

Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i replaced the whole throttle body with a used one but when my old one was off i inspected it and my problems were because the fitv was completely clogged up when i put the used one on after a bit of tinkering i got it to finally idle perfect
my gas mileage increased drastically before i was only making 250kms on a full tank, now ive only driven 250 kms but ive only went through a quarter tank of gas and thats driving the 401 doing 120 for an hour

so if anyone is getting bad gas mileage or poor idling i would definetly check this valve it only takes 10mins to get off.

yea ive checked mine out clean as can be...

I also held my hand over the intake and usually a car would die out, mine stays running and i can also hit the throttle and it will stay running with my hand over the intake...

So im guessing ive got a leak somewhere and i know its not a vaccum line cause ive checked all of those.. Probally intake manifold gasket or something i dont know..
