Default '94 VX Project

I have a bunch of questions. Hopefully there are some of you here that are willing to help.

I own a '94 Civic VX Hatch (as if it came any other way) and I have many plans for it in the future. I would like to know some things just about the engine for now. It has the original D15Z1 in it and I hate how little horsepower it has. I was thinking about getting a complete engine swap, but I went to SOHCHonda.com and after reading some things there I have started thinking about piecing together a D-series engine from different ones (different head/block/part combos). First of all I want to know if I can piece something nice together starting from my stock engine. I would rather not have to buy a whole new engine considering I'm in college right now. You know the whole poor college student thing... Even before that i guess I should let whoever is going to help me out here know that I plan to boost my way to the top, so is my engine even going to be able to handle boosts of 10-15 or so lbs?

So what do I know? I know my d15 has the same length rods as d16s and it's stroke is 84.5 as opposed to the 90 of the d16 series engines. It's compression isn't much different so are my pistons shorter or is there just more clearance in the cylinder. That's assuming I know what I'm talking about and compression goes up as the clearance goes down.

I want to learn everything I can about Honda motors, or just motors in general. What is mapping and how do you change it? What compression is better for boost, higher or lower? Do D15 and D16 parts even match very well? As in could a D16 head just slip right on a D15 block? Do you want to port and polish or bore out an engine that is going to be accepting a turbo set up or will it weaken it too much?

Tell me everything you know!

If you're a poor college student, IMO, I'd just save about $500, swap in a D16Z6 from a Si, and then enjoy the reliable, pep through college, maybe if you can afford it, boost it later on. Once you start modding, money can become tied up real quick, and if something seriously goes wrong, you can find yourself without a car. But this is my conservative view.

You wont be satisfied with any answers that will come from this thread.

search

read

learn

repeat.

No your motor wont handle 10-12 psi stock, lower compression for boost, higher for all motor. If I were you, just put an LS in there if youre going the cheap route.

You have alot to learn from first impression...Take your time, and set out a plan. Read up on what kind of engine you want, and how practical you want it to be....Anyways, good luck.

I wasn't hoping to handle 10-12 on this engine at all, I'm saying I would like to be able to later on. Hopefully there are more people that can help than 2!

Well, if you ever take out your motor and swap in another, I will buy your complete D15Z1 setup, and I will come and pick it up.

How much would you pay for it?

Apparently not many people want to help someone who really wants to learn in these forums. That kinda' sucks, I was looking forward to learning as much as I could about my car...

Just ignore this post

Relax, geez. The entire forum isn't going to bend over backwards to answer your questions. I would go with the z6, as was already mentioned, and just hold off on anything too ridiculous for right now. Read and learn and start to make answers to questions on your own. It's not that big a deal.

I wasn't asking them to, I just wanted some answers and I figured if I went to bed and woke up 7 hrs later I would have at least one more reply... and I am relaxed thanks. Plus I just wanted to say something to get my post off of page 3.

You're in college and poor - why **** with a vehicle that gets excellent gas mileage and will probably outlast any combo of head/block/parts combo that you can assemble??

I'd say search some more. Buy a Helms manual as well and study that thing if you want to know more (than you probably care to) about your car and engine.

These answers and more really do reside in the search if you read more than just the first page of results....both recent and archived.
