94 honda civic reverse problems
I own a 1994 Honda civic ex and ever since i bought it the reverse acts up from time to time. Sometimes when I first climb into the car and try to put the car in reverse it won't. Whenever I start the car I always push the clutch in. If the car won't go into reverse I can release the clutch and press it in again then I can put it into reverse. The car has been like this for twenty thousand miles and I don't know why I haven't addressed the problem earlier. One side note is that the shift bearings are bad so the shifter is lose when it is in gear. I don't know it this would contribute to the problem.
Any suggestions or people that have had a similar problem would be very helpful
The rest of the gear shift great.
Thanks.

Re: 94 honda civic reverse problems
Welcome to Honda reverse on these 92-95's... That's quite common and normal. After awhile you get used to throwing it into second gear then reverse. The 2nd gear synchros help align the mainshaft easier than the reverse synchros do and reverse is just a side cog that gets thrown up against the first gear on the main shaft. Or do I have my shafts backwards??? I don't remember off the top of my head, but you get the idea... First and Second run on the same shaft so throwing it into second helps for reverse.
Or do as you do and that's pop the clutch out to rotate the shafts some and then try again.
Either way works and is pretty typical on these Honda's.

Re: 94 honda civic reverse problems
You can find out for sure. Go out to a huge deserted parking lot. Put her in reverse, and accelerate to redline at WOT. Crack vtec. If you can hit redline in reverse then your reverse gear is fine.
Haha just kidding. I've alsways wanted to try that though.
Good luck OP
