do you know if you're using the stock p28 ECU or if it's chipped/modified?

what does the tach read when the engine is at idle.. say like at a stoplight...? the only thing i can think of is the gauge isnt reading correctly.

true, it might not be an ECU, he said the car's completely stock, a P28 chip if I remember correctly is an upgrade chip, a plugin ECU, that's not stock. It really sounds like the v-tech system isn't working though, do you hear it go into the v-tech power band thing?

a past car of mine had a clogged/broken up/bad catalytic converter and had the symptoms that you're describing.

how many miles and does your engine burn oil?

since the car like you said is stock your not going to hear vtec. Removed the factory intake pipe and drive the car to your redline and see if it hits vtec. It should engage at 5k. If your reading your tach and your hear engage before 5k, then you found your problem, the tach. If it doesnt work at then its your ecu.

a P28 is not an upgrade unless it has been chipped. Like others have said, vtec is difficult to hear on a sohc motor. I would guess the tach is reading wrong. they have been known to be inaccurate at high rpm. How do you know your tach is reading correctly?

Make sure your car has a P28. Check to see how much oil is in the car. Without oil the VTEC solinoid cannot open, thus rendering the almighty VTEC useless.

Strange that the car won't go above 5000rpm.

Is it that the car won't go any further than 5k or is it that YOU don't feel comfortable taking the car above 5k?

very possible. a clogged cat will restrict exhaust flow at higher rpms, and the motor can only take in as much air as it can push out.

OP, when you hit 5k, does it feel like your rpms hit a wall and the tach bounces down a few hundred rpms then back up, or does the tach gradually slow down and hold at 5k?
