94 civic ex power loss and idle problems - Blown head gasket?
this is the first time this has ever happend. While driving yesterday, i was going around 45. and accelerated to get up to 50 soon after doing that i started slowing down while my foot was on the pedal. tryed giving it gas the rpms would go up slitly then continue to drop. so i pulled over and at a stop my rpms where at 100 maybe 200 suprisingly the car didnt turn off. this happend a couple times on the way home i pull over put the car in park wait. then put it in drive and drive off just fine then a couple minutes later i would drop speed and no matter how far i pushed down the pedal it would not accelerate. now i do have a bad head gasket and when i got home i checked the oil and it was very low. could that be a reason, or is that besides the point?

you have a bad headgasket? suckin in water could cause that, however, it sounds like a Secondary on the coil. id do a Ohm's test, prob a bad coil.

For the Ohms test you'll need a multi meter, get a compression test to check for bad head gasket, if it's that bad of a gasket your exhaust should be thick white smoke.

Never had any smoke. On that all i know is that the oil is dripping all over the block and it seems to leak more when i rev the engine. It also looks like its coming from under the dizzy.

You need to replace your distributor oring for the oil leaking, and sounds like a problem with your distributor

Maybe even a bad valve cover gasket, when you rev it pumps oil up which makes pressure and that is why it would leak more when u rev

Well that clears up the oil leakage. Also why we are talking about it. If i look under the car at the drip spots i have one spot dripping off the tranny, one dripping off the oil pan( i replaced the oil pan gasket my self so i think its just running off the pan) there is also a little bar hanging down right in front of the oil pan and its dripping off that. then lastly, the timing belt cover. I could possibly have a few bad gaskets?? And for the losing power while driving.... is it an ignition coil?

So the ohms test on the coil and sounds like it just a bad valve cover Gasket, prop ably broken in multiple spots

I'm starting to think it's the alternator. I drove it yesterday, First time in a couple days and this time the engine shut off on me. THEN took awhile to start back up.

If it was the head gasket, you'd see this foamy junk when you open the oil cap. It's a mix of oil and coolant. Don't eat it.

- Replace the valve cover gasket and grommet seals.
- Make sure the oil pan gasket you installed is sealing (did you use Hondabond or Grey RTV in the corners as suggeted in the manual?)
- Make sure you're getting bright whitish-blue spark on all four plugs.
- Get a multimeter and test the ignition coil. While you're messing around with the distributor, replace the distributor o-ring too. Remember to reset ignition timing after you disturb the distributor in any way.
- Remove the upper timing cover and make sure there's no oil inside. If there is, replace the camshaft seal o-ring.
- If you're suspicious about the alternator, test the battery and alternator at the same time with a multimeter. I doubt it's your alternator, otherwise your battery wouldn't be charging, but you can test them both anyway if it eases your worries.
- What makes you think you have a bad head gasket? Do you smell a sweet odor from the exhaust when car is running? Is there oil sludge in your coolant reservoir? Is there the white foamy stuff pictured above underneath your oil cap? Do you slowly lose coolant without leaking it? Are you blowing white smoke from exhaust when accelerating? These are all signs of a blown head gasket. The only way to be sure is to perform a proper leakdown test.
