94 Civic DX Ignition Trouble
Had an interesting experience on the highway yesterday. After a popping noise a repetitive noise was heard like a belt flipping around on a pulley. I pulled off and shut it down, I noticed that I had a massive loss of power. All my belts were good. Got it towed home.
Took off the valve cover to find one spark plug had backed all the way out of it's threads. A second was on its way out. I am guessing this happens when the people who install them don't torque them correctly. New plugs, new wires, new valve cover gasket, and new spark plug seals installed. Everything torqued to the spec in my Haynes.
Now the engine cranks but won't turn over. It has gas. I hear the fuel pump running. Double and triple checked that everything is plugged in all the way. What could be wrong here?
I've done a little bit of looking around in the forum without luck.

I don't believe the sparks plugs will do that if you don't torque them correctly. I never torque my plugs to spec and I've never had a problem.
My first guess would be to take the valve cover off and visually inspect the internals.

Here is a picture of when I had the valve cover off.

Other than putting in a spark plug wrench and pulling it out with a spark plug in it (didn't even turn it or anything) the other thing I noticed was that the spark plug seals had a sealant on them. They were very hard to get out and replace.
I failed to notice anything wrong with the valve cover off. But, this was my first time in this vehicle.

Re: 94 Civic DX Ignition Trouble
The coil was the culprit. Had a chain reaction here. Turns out, that an oil leak into the spark plug chamber lubricated the plug enough for the plug to back out. When the plug backed out it lost it's ground. Apparently, based on what I found online, this is a big enough issue to damage the coil. A Meter revealed the coil was bad.
Got new seals to prevent the oil leak again and replaced the coil. It's running better than I have ever seen it run. Thanks for the help.
