Default 94 Civic DX coupe w/dead motor - Good swap candidate?

First a quick intro as I'm new to this forum. I'm posting here to help my brother-in-law out with his car. I'm a car guy, but my background is mostly European cars. I've done some auto crossing & did some SCCA Club Racing for a couple of years (before house & baby). My bro-in-law is not a car guy at all.

He cooked the motor in this car. I think he may have overheated it, & the timing belt was loose when I first went to look at it. Anyway, he's been wanting to get a truck for a while; so keeping this car is not in the cards. We're trying to decide between installing a used engine & selling it or selling it as is. I know that certain Hondas make good candidates for engine swaps, but I don't know which ones. I'm thinking that if this would make a good swap candidate, perhaps he could sell it as is. If not, we'll probably go with a used motor. So, I'd like to hear this group's opinions as to whether or not this is a desirable candidate for a swap. Also, assuming that it is, I'd appreciate it if someone could refer me to any Honda enthusiast groups in my local area (Houston, TX) where I could advertise the car. I don't think my bro-in-law would want to mess with a long distance transaction.

A search on the term "swap" didn't give me much to go on. Suggestions of better search terms are appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance.

if the body is in good cond. and the car is stock the most u will get for a 94 coupe shell will probably be 1500 if not a few hundred less. if i was u i would pick up a used low mileage non-vtec motor for like 100-200 at most with low mileage and u can probably get at least 2500 for it esp. if motor has low miles

Thanks for the info. If he could get a used motor for $200 or get $1000+ as is, he'd be a really happy camper. I told him the car was only worth $500 as is, & a couple of local junk yards quoted me $500 for a used motor. The body's in decent shape, but it's not great. It has a 3 foot paint job, & some cosmetic damage in the front was not very well repaired. I know it would never bring $1500, but if it could bring $1000 as is, it may just be worth our while to sell it.

I had been considering pulling the head to see if we could get away with just rings & a head gasket, but it sounds like I shouldn't even bother.

if to a junk yard to get a engine they will just sell you the engine. Not the ecu, wiring harness and ect. The car WILL NOT run unless you have all the other accessories. IMO go to hondomotorsonline.com buy you the b16 or b18 any series and your brother-in-law will be a happy camper!!

It sounds like you guys are just looking to get it back on the road. Your best bet is to look up The local engine importers in the phone book and buy a longblock from them for less than 500. BTW, your car is an excellent candidate for a swap, DX copues are actually pretty light.

Default Thanks for the help - car's actually a 93 - gonna try to sell as is

Big correction; car's actually a 93, not a 94. Sorry about that.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help. We're gonna try to sell as is for a little while. If there's little or no interest, we'll drop a used motor in it, probably after the holidays. I posted it on the houston-imports forum.
