Icon6 94 Civic D15B7 eratic idle problem

I have a 94 Civic Coupe with a D15B7 motor and AUTO Transmission. either the Coil or ignitor had gone and the car would not start so i replaced the whole distributor. turned it over and it started straight up but now my RPM is bouncing from about 1000 to 3000 every few seconds...

does anyone have any idea why this would be? would it be timing? or another electrical problem?

any help is appreciated
thanks

Any CEL codes?

Is the coolant level low in either the reservoir or radiator? Has any work been done on the cooling system?

Also click the IACV and FITV links in my signature.

I havnt had any CEL codes.

no work has been completed on the coolant or radiator system although it will need attention as it looks very... rusty in there (ive only recently bought the car).

i will clean the IACV/FITV tomorrow and see if that does the trick!

Does the CEL work?

This^ type of neglect is VERY worrisome. This may sound extreme, but consider draining the existing coolant, replacing with fresh, and then reselling the car as fast as possible.

Eliminating the Coolant flow to the FITV all together; will that help OR worsen the idleing???

^Bad. FITV is coolant temp controlled.

Does the car do this hunting/revving idle on a cold start only? Or does it do it only after the car is already warmed up? And, yea, if you plan on keeping the car, inspect everything thoroughly. If the radiator is rusted, consider replacing it... or at least flushing it. Sounds like the previous owner didn't keep very good care of it. :/
