94 5spd dx - random squealing?
rarely when i drive my car it will make a high pitched squealing noise...i've noticed i can make it stop when i put it in neutral and then put it back in gear, but make sure it's in gear good...it doesn't sound like grinding. just squealing. what's this noise coming from?

I think it's time to replace your front brakes, there's a piece of metal that rubs against the rotor when the pads are worn which is supposed to notify you that you're in need of replacing your pads.

it sounds nothing like brake squealing though. it's a lot louder and it doesn't make noise when i brake, it makes noise right when i shift into gear.

try popping the hood. have someone turn the steering wheel. turn on the ac if u have one. it might be coming from one of your accessory belts. if not then its your brakes? lol. usually on cold days those damn belts screech if not tensioned enuff or worn out.
maybe you need new brakes? does it only happen when you press on the brakes? is it a metallic squeal? then its brakes. or maybe your brake pedal is squeaking like my clutch pedal. lmao. oh well.

What condition is your throwout bearing and clutch in. Are you shifting at high rev's etc. I could help you more, but I need to know more info on when and how it squeal. IM or post here and I know I could help you as I have a large knowledge of these tranny's and in general.

I had a similar problem with my mazda protege, it would randomly start squeeling and would go away as soon as i touched the brakes. I believe it was the brake pads that needed replaced.
good luck

yes there are brake squeelers in alot of cars, my old civics had them. they make weird loud random squeeling noises when the brakes get very worn. and they are easy to check as well to verify/eliminate them as the problem.

it's not brakes, i know what brakes sound like when they're going bad. it's not the AC or anything because i had that problem with my explorer and my friend's caravan did too. this is a different sound. it is coming from either the transmission or the clutch assembly and only happens right after i change gears.
