Default 93' Sol Si: Tranny Input Shaft Seal Replacement (rebuild required?)

Hey folks,

I've got an oil contaminated clutch, either from the rear main seal, or the tranny input shaft seal. I'd like to know if the tranny input shaft seal can be replaced externally, or if a tranny rebuild is required.

I'd like to remove the transmission, replace the contaminated clutch and the two seals without having to pull apart the transmission, is this possible? The service manual was unclear.

Thanks.

Gotta remove the tranny, crack the case, remove the mainshaft and gearset, and knock out the bearing, then you can get to the seal.

split case, remove gear cluster, remove ISB and seal, replace with new parts, reassemble and seal the case.

I charge $80 including parts IF you drop it off.

So it sounds like the mainshaft and countershaft come out as an assembly. So just for clarification (never worked on a tranny) I won't need to reset any gears, and the rest of the parts (diff, etc.) will sit right where they are when the gearset is removed?

isb = input shaft bearing?

Lastly, once the mainshaft and countershaft assembly is removed, i will find the input shaft bearing pressed into the housing with the seal behind it?

Thanks a lot for helping. I'm pretty mechanically inclined (mech engineer) so i'm pretty confident this is something i can handle, i just want to get as much knowledge as i can before i start pulling stuff apart.

You won't have to reset or set any gears if you be careful and pull everything out slow and remember where it goes. The input shaft bearing is not pressed in but rather tapped in with a large socket. It can be tapped out with a large screwdriver from the backside but I would suggest you replace it while you have it out seeing as that part goes out often and you already have it apart.

Thanks a bunch for the info everyone, I think I'll be able to do this without screwing too much stuff up :-)

If you've got any other tips, feel free to pass them on.

Thx,
Jeff

Use a 12" long 1/4" extension through the shaft opening to knock out the ISB.
