93 sol SI -- Hot start, cranks up bad, runs rough. Help me with a checklist.
Heres the issue:
- crank up car when its cold, starts and idles fine.
- once it heats up, try to start again and its really rough. Sounds like its mis firing, skipping and just runs bad for a few seconds then it smooths out.
- idle is rough when its hot, sounds like its skipping.
- running down the road, sounds perfect. Great gas mileage, power, etc.
So I'm trying to narrow down this issue with my beloved Jellybean. From my research, I've narrowed it down to these things:
- Main relay possibly going bad.
- Ignitor in dizzy.
- Spark plug wires
Anything else it could be? I do have a crack in my exhaust manifold, but I can't see it causing this many issues. It's something I'm going to fix first.
Any ideas or troubleshooting I can do?
Help is appreciated!

You might look at the fuel pump, I've had some in the past be fine when cold but after warming up don't work the best. If it were me I'd do a full tune up and go from there.

The rough art has been going n for many monts, but after I rebuilt it, it's much worse. The dizzy/ components h ave almost 260k on em.
I swapped fuel relays: no change. So thats not it. It runs perfect going down the road t speed.

Its sounds (to me at least so take it however you want to) like an ignition issue.
You have fuel...and air. You cam timing should not be off that much, assuming that you aligned everything properly when you rebuilt it.
Have you tried:
Spark Plugs
Plug Wires
Distributor Cap + Rotor
PCV (yeah, it unrelated but its like $5 max)
Fuel Filter (another general thing)
and the computer has no codes on it or anything?
It could be the ICM or the Coil, but you might as well eliminate the cheaper parts first.

X2 with the ignition timing.
Fuel pressure probably is ok if its fine going down the road, prolly not a fuel pump issue if it's not doing it when cold.
While you're there you might as well change fuel filter, plugs etc.
Other than that I donno.

Probably way off on this one...but you did use OEM or better head bolts right? I'm also assuming that you did a wet torque when installing? I had a very similar problem years ago when I cheaped out on some head bolts.
Car would run fine, shut it off, ran terrible. Cooled off, start it up, ran great again.
2 ways you can check this 1: pop off the valve cover and re-check the torque on your headbolts.
2: warm up the vehicle, pull out the tube in the radiator over flow, carefully put your thumb over it and check to make sure it isnt blowing out air.
More then likely, it's not this (really unlikely). But just incase it doesn't hurt to check it out.
But I will wrap my mind around this one today and see if I can come up with a more possible solution of what it could be.
