Default 93 Del Sol Speedo help

I have a 1993 Del Sol Si D16Z6 5Spd and the speedo isn't working with no codes however speeds above 70 the speedo starts to read 5 mph sometimes. First i replaced the VSS with one off my 94 Civic Coupe and still nothing. Next i checked the wiring connector as i know they tend to corrode and rust out. Checking with the key in the on position as follows, Yellow w/ Blue trace 12.17 V, Yellow 9.48 V and Black has a good ground. I unplugged the VSS drove around the block and only noticed that i had a CEL of 17 (VSS) and the odometer and trip wasn't working but everything else on the dash was. i'm out of ideals at the moment and thinking is it something in the trans?

With the VSS connected, does the odometer or tripmeter work?

The problem must be in the speedometer head itself then, since both the speedometer and odometer use the exact same signal from the VSS. It may work to clean up and resolder its circuit board like you would a main relay. I've fixed a bunch of Toyotas that way.

ill check the cluster when i get time tomorrow and post my findings. the more i think about it, with it working sometime at 5 mph seems like a cold solider joint or a bad steeper motor but never had a speedo be this troublesome before in a honda. Thanks

Update. I removed the cluster and didn't see any bad solider joints and checked voltage on the VSS wire in the connector in dash and its only reading 0.2 V but that not what it read on the same wire at the sensor. so im thinking that it might not be getting the signal all the way to the speedo. ill check back sat when im off and see what i can find.

Did you take the speedometer unit out of the cluster, or just look at the printed wiring on the back of the cluster?

Odometer rolls and CEL does not light would almost always mean the sensor and wiring are OK.

I don't believe that an open in the VSS-to-speedometer wire would throw code 17.

yes, the circuit board looked ok no cold solider joints or loose connections. with the vss pluged up the odometer and trip work but no the speedo, however above 70mph+ sometimes it will read 5mph-ish. i planed on running a wire to see if that would work but my injectors stopped working so that is my main goal as its my daily driver. ill post what i find out when i can.

Wait. If the odometer and tripmeter work, the wire is fine. Replace the speedometer unit.
