'93 Civic VX fuel gauge questions
Hey guys i need some help here. I'm new around here so forgive me if i've broken any rules. I did do a topic search, but didn't come up with much.
I just acquired a '93 Civic VX hatch 3 days ago, with almost 60,000 miles on it. Its in excellent condition and i had my mechanic take care of a few essential repairs to it already, so its running fine. The problem is that after having driven for about 80-90 miles, i start getting wild fluxuations on my fuel gauge. One second it will read a 3/4 of a tank, and then next it will read 1/4 of a tank left. I believe the car only has an 8 gallon tank, give or take a little.
I'm wondering if this is just normal, or if i should have this checked out. Its really annoying to wonder whether i have a half tank of gas left or if i'm near empty. especially since it is such a small tank. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Also I'm curious what kind of gas mileage is should realistically expect to get with this thing. I have read sources that say about 45-50 miles per gallon, but i'm wondering if any civic vx owners can set me straight on the realities of the car. Thanks guys.

Re: '93 Civic VX fuel gauge questions (Don't Panic)
I've noticed with my 92 VX my gas gauge jumps around when I am turning, sppeding up slowing down, going up hill going down hill... I think it's normal, it's been doing that since the car was new off the car lot...

Re: '93 Civic VX fuel gauge questions (rolow)
thanks for the tips on the fuel gauge, and now i have a new question for you. I just filled up the gas tank (i put in 7.5 gallons of 87 from unical) and on that much gas i made it 200 miles. That averages out to about 26 2/3 miles per gallon of gas. Now i just got this car about two weeks ago, and its been getting this kinda gas mileage since i got it.
The question is this: Should i be getting better gas mileage (which i am under the assumption i should)?? If so, what are some simple things to check to try and improve the gas mileage? Could it be how i'm driving? I haven't been racing the car around, so that would be strange, although i don't have the funky clutch entirely figured out yet. I'm curious what kind of gas mileage i should be getting, what to check for if i should be getting better mileage, and futher tips on how to improve my fuel economy when driving. Thanks a lot guys.

Well you should be getting around 30-40mpg depending one how hard/easy you drive it and how much of it is freeway vrs stop and go...
Simple things to check for better gas milage, Spark plugs, timing, airfilter, tire pressure and turning your AC off on the VX saves tons of gas!
I hope this was helpful!

Re: '93 Civic VX fuel gauge questions (Don't Panic)
The tank on the VX is a 10.0 gallon tank. It's teenie, but I've managed to get 300+ miles per tank, and that's with a GS-R motor. Best observed tank of gas was 36mpg. Go VX!
The reason ours fluctuates more than say an Integra or anything else is because they have a bigger tank. Imagine you have a 1 gallon tank, it's going to change even more because you're taking away a larger percentage of the original volume away. That's the way the Honda fuel gauges work, the closer you get to the bottom of the tank, the more rapidly the level drops. And unfortunatly, we're not blessed with a gas light. Almost found that out the hard way.

My Guage sucks too...i moved all over......it blows....its just the weakness in the USDM needles...a friend told me that the "JDM" guage clusters don't do this...
26mpg is pretty low, I get in that range with my ZC swap i/h/e and test pipe and thats mashin on the gas all the time..... When my VX was still stock I was getting 38-42mpg....it was great......but that was driving like a lil bitch..hahahha
