You can use a GPS if you've got one. You could also drive with the flow of traffic. Being able to mentally calculate your vehicle's speed based on gear and RPM is another option, if you have a tach. I usually sort of feel the speed and go with my gut.

re: 93 civic hatch - speedometer doesn't work
I checked the vss connector and none of the pins are corroded. It actually looks really good. So Im hoping it actually is the sensor. and just to make sure when i got to order the part it is part of the transmission correct? Because when I pull up a 93 teggy i dont see a correct part. but when i pull up the 93 si I see the correct part (what appears to me as the correct part). I just want to make sure i dont order the wrong part and get shafted with buying another one because i didnt check my resources...

Does the odometer work? If the odometer works the VSS is OK and the problem is the speedometer head.
Also the ECU looks at the VSS signal and will throw a code if it is missing. Test this by unplugging VSS and test drive, the CEL should come on when you roll downhill or otherwise coast for several seconds in gear but not touching the gas pedal. If the CEL does that but stays out with the sensor plugged in, the VSS is probably OK and the speedometer is bad.

Test is like mk378 stated. Also you can try and replace the vss. Or more thank likely its the speedo. You can replace it with a junk yard one or take it apart and try to re solder some of the connections. google it. its a common problem an fix. My car is doing it and will be fixed this weekend.
