'93 Civic alternator problems
I've done the usual searching and cant find an answer to my question.
Stock DX, not sure of age of alternator.
When you start the car, the battery light stays on (12. something volts), I can hit the alt. with a hammer & the light goes out(14.4 volts). From testing, the light stays out and there is a constant 14.4 volts until the car is shut off. Restart the car & the light is on again and only 12. something volts.
Question: Could it just be the brushes or is it the voltage regulator?
I know that it's going out but brushes cost about $20 to replace while a voltage regulator cost more than replaceing the whole alternator.
THANKS!

First check whether the alternator large white wire and the 4P connector are clean, snug, and undamaged.
If you have the tools and parts, you can rebuild the alternator. May as well replace the bearings while you're in there.
