Default 92 hatch, ls motor(obd2 to 1), and a smog ref....questions

ok if im goin to swap a newer ls motor into my 92 hatch, but convert the motor to odb1....

if i eventually want to get it ref'd(in california) i know i am gonna need the ecu, but are they gonna make me change my fuel tank, cause the obd2 ls's is differen't from the odb1 chassis, plus is ther anythign else ref related that i need to know...i dont see why it would be as hard as a jdm swap cause the motors usdm and should pass smog, but i know refs can be dicks if they want to.

why dont u just leave the motor how it is and not convert it to obd1 until u have it smogged? then play with it.

If you pull in your civic to get it reffed with the Ls motor, they will notice! It's DOHC not SOHC, etc.
I'm 95% sure that getting it re registered as a teg won't work because you need VIN's
unless you have a hook up at the DMV or local smog shops, then I second JDM_spoonEG to leave you current motor in till after smog.

It's not that hard.

CA Law states:
1. Motor must be same year or newer
2. You must have all the emissions that the donor car has.

These rules are bendable though. We have passed GSR engines in 2000 Civic's with a 96 Engine. Reason being that the 96 engine and a 2000 engine are the same. The ref will not know the difference.
Also the emmissions between a Civic and Integra are the same. Same charcoal canister. This is basically the only frame mounted OBD1 part. As far as OBD2, the tank pressure sensor is the same on both cars.

Your problem though is that you have a OBD2 donor motor. This will be nearly impossible to pass. Even though emmisions are the same, yuo do not have OBD2 sensors.

You would have to run a 96 harness, hook up the crank fluctuation sensor, the evap sol, OBD2 charcoal can, OBD2 fuel tank (will NOT fit), OBD2 Cat w/ 2nd o2

You would be better off finding a 94-95 ls motor. You could even pass w/ a JDM ls motor as this is OBD1. OBD2 is a US market feature only and any year JDM engine will be OBD1. You would use you single slammer emmisions components.

Good luck. We have successfully passed many Honda swaps at CA state ref stations. It just makes for a more pricey swap. It is very rewarding to pop your hood for a cop and show the new engine label though.
