Default 92 EG hesitation and stalling issue

Well all of a sudden, my EG started hesitating and stalling really bad about a week ago. I changed the spark plugs hoping that was the issue. I drove it to work and it seemed ok for about the first part of the trip, but as I got closer to work, the car was just inching along. Had to get it towed home since it began smoking from the back of the engine bay. After speaking to a mechanic friend, he suggested maybe water in the fuel, so I changed the fuel filter and added HEET.

Yesterday I decided to drive it to the gas station to put in some fresh gas in, but a block away, the car would barely move. I turned around and parked it and noticed it was dripping fire under the engine. I put the fire out and popped the hood. Apparently the engine got so hot that the film of oil on the tranny (needs a new dist o-ring) was dripping on the ground.

So now I'm at a loss as to what the issue is. The cooling system is fine and at no time did it seem to be overheating...besides the obvious issue now.

Any suggestions?

Nothing?

The motor is a 1.5L and the tranny is auto. I should have mentioned that earlier.

hey questmcoupe, i think it might just be your fuel pump that went dead on you.

You should that out

I guess I could look into that. I would think it would have a problem starting or idling if the pump was bad though. It idles fine and starts ok. Thanks for the reply.

Unbolt your catalytic converter and drive it around the block, see if you get the same problem.

No engine codes? I was thinking fuel pump also, check your main relay too. Take the casing off and just make sure it looks good inside.

Good call! Exhaust is probably getting hot enough, because of the blockage, to start the oil on fire.

Yeah, only non-fuel-leak-related engine fire I've seen was due to a plugged (and thus way overheating) exhaust. Makes me think you need a new catalytic converter, but thankfully there's a very easy way to check for that.
