How do I fix something like this? Is it the radiator, the thermostat? I just got the car, so I don't know the history on it. It has 132xxx miles though.

your best bet is to flush the radiator and put in new fluid and make sure its topped off... it prob is low on radiator fluid right now

check and see if the cooling fan is coming on. Change your thermostat and coolant and check your compresion. Maybe you have a blown headgasket But i bet your cooling fan isnt coming on.

Check: fluid level, coolant lines for air, thermostat, radiator or water pump.
Any leaks?

Check for leaks....sounds like a radiator. Check to see if your fan is coming on.

Easy check for thermostat:
Crank car and let it run until it gets warm.
Feel the lower radiator hose.
If the hose has no pressure and is cold, then your thermostat isn't opening up.
If the hose is hot and pressurized then you need to look elsewhere than the thermostat.

usually if your car is moving(like on the freeway) and it overheats its because of low fluid, thermostat stuck closed, clogged radiator/coolant passages, or waterpump needs replacement, i would check in that order. If your car overheats while sitting still after warmup(like at a stop light) its either low on coolant/air in the system, fan not coming on(switch, relay, fan motor) or water pump needs replacement.

I would agree with what everybody is saying. Have your cooling system check, or you can check all of the mentioned items yourself. Check your fan to see if it's coming on, that happened to my friend's car, so we simply ran the fan constant, and that solved the problem...if the overheating continues to occur after all of this, unfortunately it could be the head gasket. one way to check for a blown head gasket is to check the coolant to see if any oil is present/mixed in...good luck

yeah forgot about that one on me. yeah usually if the car is ran for a period of time because of the afore mentioned things your headgasket is going to go with it. hopefully its something simple, good luck

ahh yeah and a good way to check if your head gasket is blown is start your car with the radiator cap off it there is air bubbles in coming up then your head gasket is blown. Dont take cap off while hot or else you will be sorry.

Goddamn! I think I can fix the problem now!My radiator hose gets hot, there is coolant in the overflow bottle, and I believe the fan does go on. It only gets real hot on the highway. When I stop, it cools down a little. Thanks for all the help!!
