92 CX hb will start but has rough idle and won't rev.
I plan on changing the eng. in this car but I want it to run first to simplify trouble shooting later. I can start the car and it will idle (really) rough, but will not rev at all. The tone changes when I hit the gas but the r's don't go up. This is killing me. TIA

Re: 92 CX hb will start but has rough idle and won't rev. (DETROITREX)
It could be any number of things ... BUT try this first.
Just below the thermostat, on the block(above the tranny, on the back right corner of the block) there is a bundle of wires that are grounded to the block. Take off (unbolt) the wires ..carefully clean the connectors with emery paper, inspect the connectors to make sure they are ok (not broken inside, if they are, crimp on new ring connectors) sand the part of the block where the wires attach, reattach the nice shiny wires and try the car again.
Those wires are the grounds for the ECU, injectors, and the distributor .... they corrode quickly, I think because of the proximity of the thermostat (hot water) when they corrode they now longer make good contact and the injectors cannot produce enough fuel flow and or the distributor cannot prouce enough spark to rev... just to start.
This happened to my car when I swapped a new motor in without cleaning the connectors ...it took me 5 days to trouble shoot this problem
If this does not work .... look at other fuel or spark related problem area's ...clogged fuel filter, fuel line, fuel pump, bad distributor ignitor, coil, rotor, or cap
Good luck
