Okay so my sister’s boyfriend just got the 92 civic hatch and the speedometer does not work, it will jump sometimes but not very much. My first thought was that it would be the VSS so I got one from a member on here and just got done putting it in and it still done not work. Correct me if I am wrong but I am thinking that it could be the cluster? Any input would be very much appreciated thanks.
(And just to clear this up yes I did search and found some useful info and I am about to go out and try it but in the threads that I did find they also had other symptoms with the car as well)

The 92-95 Civic clusters are well known for having the speedos go out. This happened to me. How I fixed it was to get another cluster (a spare junk one for me) and swap over the circuit board directly attached to the speedo.

Before doing what I did, try loosening and retightening the screws connecting the speedo to the cluster housing.

Okay so I tried everything that I have been told and or found out by searching (with the exception of getting a new cluster) and nothing has worked. So I took the cluster apart and when you move the speedometer needle to say like up to ’’50 mph’’ it should move back to ‘’0 mph’’ (with a little bit of resistance, falling slowly) on its own right? But when I moved the speedometer needle up it will just fall (with no resistance) ether back to ‘’0 mph’’ or to ‘’125 mph’’ (the max which I believe is 125 mph) whichever side it is moved more to. So that would mean the cluster is bad right? Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again for all the help guy’s.

If CEL is on, check the CEL FIRST!!

If the CEL pertains to the speedo sensor, ding ding ding, it's probably just the sensor located ontop of the transmission.

If CEL is NOT on....
Problem: The speedo doesn't work but the odometer works.
Solution: Replace the cluster or just replace the speedo gauge

Problem: The speedo doesn't work AND the odometer doesn't work.
Solution 1*: Bad Sensor - Replace the speedo sensor in the transmission.
*CEL should be on
Solution 2: Bad Gauge - Replace cluster or just replace the speedo gauge
IF Neither solution above fixed it.
Solution 3: Check all wiring from the sensor to the gauge. Because the signal is disrupted somewhere.

Okay so now the cluster is working but it is not registering the right speed. How would I go about fixing that?
