Default 92 civic engine runs poorly in drive fine in neutral?

My 92 civic suddenly started running really rough on the way home the other day.

Got it home and it will idle and rev fine in neutral or park, but as soon as you put it in gear the engine starts running very rough for some reason.

does anyone know what could cause this? the transmission itself shifts fine but I dont know why putting it in drive causes the engine to run horribly.

for starters, check your transmission fluid. also, your idle may be too low, causing it to dip under idle spec and run rough. if both those check out, sounds like there is excessive load on the motor, causing it to bog down. all you maintainence up to snuff?

all the basic maitenance is good, plugs, wires, etc. tranny fluid is ok and the transmission itself shifts fine. and in neutral or park the idle is what it has always been. In drive it does go down to what seems kinda low but its also miss firing and doesnt run any better when you actually drive the car and get the RPMS up.

do you have a number? or are you going by "ear"?

going by ear, dont have a tach I can hook up right now for an actual reading.

but like i said its not just running poorly at idle, so if the idle itself is off would that still effect it while driving? And it doesnt sound off at all when in park but my ear isnt a tach obviously...

first things first, get a timing light/tach and set the idle. automatics need a higher idle, as when in D, the motor is under a load (similiar to running in 1st with the clutch halfway out). then go from there.

got between 850-900 in park (cold) when put into drive the RPM's instanly drop and bounce all over because the engine is missing and running so poorly. went all over from almost dying at 300 up to 900...

its a drastic difference between park and drive. I can rev the engine up to redline in park and its smooth and sounds great, put it in drive and it idles like death and will still drive but runs crappy through the whole rpm range.
